2.7 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This brewery does itself a real disservice by putting the beer in clear bottles as this one skunked out. From what I could tell there was a sweet malty aroma laying beneath. The color was amber with a white foamy head. The taste was more sweet caramelized malts with a burnt sugar tinge on the back end. I can always detect the alcohol with this style even when it’s as low as this one. I’m sure this would have been better had it not skunked; however, it still seemed average for the style.

As Belhaven 90/- Wee Heavy. Very classic Scotch ale with pale yellowish beige, medium, lacing head, breaking rather quickly, and dark wine red colour, transparent with good sparkling. Malt sweet aroma of hazelnut paste, toffee, plum brandy, caramel candy, cookies, medlar, brown sugar, ripe pear, some subtle varnish-like solvents, damp cellar and a hint of iron, though not disturbingly so. Taste begins restrainedly fruity, raisins, eldeberries, candied figs, sweet but not cloying, with soft carbonation and smooth, lightly oily, very malty but not very thick palate, caramelly and a bit nutty with bitterish toasted accent in the end, where it is supported by a subtle, earthy and leafy hop bitterishness and warming, rhum-like alcohol, with a drying, slightly astringent effect, but remaining in place. Pleasant, warming ale and indeed typical for its style, though I had expected a thicker body and more roasted bitterness.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
A moderate amount of malt sweetness on the aroma with light notes of fruitless. A crystal clear dark Amber appearance with an offwhite head with below average head retention. Flavor is malt forward with notes of biscuit, toast and dark caramel. Fruity esters are moderately high. Finish is dry. Mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation. Overall, it's labeled as a wee heavy and a 90 schilling, but it's definitely not a wee heavy. It's a 90 schilling. It also has a little too much toast flavor.

Toffee malty aroma. No hops on the nose. Appearance is a deep amber with a long lasting white head. Crystal clear. Flavor is heavy on kettle caramelized toffee notes. No hop flavor or esters. Mouthfeel is smooth and full with medium a carbonation. Overall, a classic wee heavy, but the malt flavor is one dimensional. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This is a review of Belhaven 90/~ Wee Heavy - a different formulation with 7.4% ABV.
330ml bottle pours deep red-amber with a durable and creamy tan head. Fine looking but the aroma is a bit disappointing with too much alcohol evident and bearing more resemblance to a dopplebock than it should. The flavor veers in that direction too, rather than favoring smoky or peaty malts. Lots of toffee and brown sugar here.

Bottle. Dark tea-like color with beige fluffy head. Aroma is mostly malty, with notes of dry fruits. Taste is sweet and maybe a bit noisy, also some notes of coffee. Aftertaste with long and good bitterness. Interesting beer.

Picked up at the COOP last week... Most of the bottleshops in Boise are also carrying it now. Enjoyed out of my FW goblet. Thin 1/2" tan head.. only okay retention and no real lacing.. the brew is clear deep walnut.
Thick maltiness, deep caramel, subtle dark fruits seem a little out of place.. pretty complex.
Rich malt without ever verging on sweet, dark toast, nutty brown malt.. honestly tastes "brown".
The body and carbonation are spot on..
Pretty damn good... I love a well made Wee Heavy and this is nearly perfect.
