Poured from 500ml bottle into dimpled mug. Aroma - This is a maltfest. Caramel, roasted and chocolate with a notes of dried dark fruit Appearance - Dark brown with ruby red highlights. 1 finger, persistent off-white head. Excellent lacing. .Flavor - Pretty much what the name implies. Heavy on the malt with the dark fruit being more prevalent than in the aroma. Sweet, but not overly so. The balance of malt amd hops definitely leaning to the malt side. Palate - Full mouthfeel. Slick. Goes down well. Carbonation is on the low side, but that’s a good thing. Overall - Very drinkable; like an irish ale or strong ale with less hops. The higher ABV(6.5%)doesn’t hurt! This style is not as popular as some other UK styles; try this one for a taste of the real deal.

Bottle (500ml). Poured extremely dark bronze with a good sized, thick, frothy, off-white head which lasted superbly. Massive notes of red cedar and sawdust on the nose with vanilla oak, rich toffee malts, Christmas pudding, good notes of earthy hops and light notes of cranberries. Flavor was very smooth with a light hop bitterness, creamy caramel malts, buttery toffee, chocolate, fruit cake, raisins, oak and roasted hazel nuts in the finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation a silky smooth texture and a great finish.

Poured into a pint glass. Dark mahogany that turns ruby red with a strong backlight. Light tan two-finger head that leaves decent lacing. Aromas of English cookies and toffee, only a touch of smoky peatiness. Taste is rich dark malts with a little peat influence. Excellent balance; not too sweet and not too smokey. Perfect carbonation, medium body. Just a really solid beer. Not a huge beer like many of the American examples of the style, but a solid, drinkable, tasty beer.
