(Bottled, BBE 10/2011) Hazy, very dark brown color with a firm, lasting, tanned and lacy head. Strong aroma of licorice, anise, roasted and smoked malt - even whiskey-like notes. Flavor is roasted-malty and smoky-peaty with sweetish dried-fruitiness. Not too burned or ashy. Medium to full body with quite high CO2. Another success from this brewery. If I could change something, I’d give this a bit more body and lower the CO2 level. But at this ABV level, this is excellent work, comparable to Fuller’s London Porter and Old Engine Oil. 5246

Bottle. Pours black. Tan head. Nose of chlorinated soapy water, smoke, roast chocolate malt, hops and caramel. Taste is dry bitter baker’s chocolate, hops and chlorinated soapy water. Maybe some used coffee grounds. Body drops out of this like a stone. Odd concoction.

Bottle @ home. Aroma is hoppy, stouty, some spices, roasted malt. Very nice and full. Flavour is roasted malt, touch of caramel sweetness, some hop bitterness, long lingering smoky roasty finish. Thinnish but fitting palate. Nice one.

clear amber, huge smooth light brown head.
aroma is licorice, rosted grains, dryness, faint sweet dark fruits. aroma is pretty much centered around licorice and roasted malts, much less around caramel and dark fruits. Still distinctly different from a porter or a stout.
flavor is hard roasted malts, charchoal, licorice, dryness. sort of resembling the darkest bock’s i’ve tasted. ends a little bit sweeter than it starts out.

Bottle. Dark brown, average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate, malty and lightly sweetish, some roasted malt and coffee, light fruitiness, faint notes of wood. Body is medium, malty a lightly sweetish flavor, light roasted malt and coffee, faint toffee. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, same roasted malt. Nice Belgian old ale – not too sweet/not too much roasted malt and coffee.

(Bottle, 0.75 l as Bellevaux Black Cuvée Spéciale, at the 16th Kerstbierfestival) The beer poured almost black. Its head was quite large and light brown. Aroma had malts, liquorice and chocolate. Palate was full bodied and dryish with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, roastedness, chocolate, liquorice, mildly sweetness, bit of hops and medium bitterness. Aftertaste was malty. Nice, tasty beer.

Its a dark malty, roasted coffee, chocolate, grand cru aged barley-wine flavor and character. Im not a huge grand cru fan, but I do appreciate the style. Its dark and spicy and malty, pretty much barrel aged dark weak wine. Pretty good overall.

Bottle at home. Very dark pour, thick solid tan head. Aroma of autumn leaves, fireplace, tobacco and some brandy. Very unique and interesting. Flavor is tobacco, varnish, antique furniture and burnt malts. Strange and interesting brew. I like it.
