Bottle. Dark brown, average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate, malty and lightly sweetish, some roasted malt and coffee, light fruitiness, faint notes of wood. Body is medium, malty a lightly sweetish flavor, light roasted malt and coffee, faint toffee. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, same roasted malt. Nice Belgian old ale – not too sweet/not too much roasted malt and coffee.

(Bottle, 0.75 l as Bellevaux Black Cuvée Spéciale, at the 16th Kerstbierfestival) The beer poured almost black. Its head was quite large and light brown. Aroma had malts, liquorice and chocolate. Palate was full bodied and dryish with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, roastedness, chocolate, liquorice, mildly sweetness, bit of hops and medium bitterness. Aftertaste was malty. Nice, tasty beer.

Its a dark malty, roasted coffee, chocolate, grand cru aged barley-wine flavor and character. Im not a huge grand cru fan, but I do appreciate the style. Its dark and spicy and malty, pretty much barrel aged dark weak wine. Pretty good overall.

Bottle at home. Very dark pour, thick solid tan head. Aroma of autumn leaves, fireplace, tobacco and some brandy. Very unique and interesting. Flavor is tobacco, varnish, antique furniture and burnt malts. Strange and interesting brew. I like it.

Bottled (from beerplanet.eu). Ambery brown colour, mediumsized brown head. Aroma is dark dry fruits, some toffee, mild roasted notes as well as quite wooden notes. Flavour is roasted malts, some toffee, roasted notes, mild metal as well as wood and some caramel. Actually old ale is a quite good categorization for this Belgian beer...

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2011 The color is black. The foam is medium high. Aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate and some coffee and licorice. Same notes are repeated in the taste. Body is light, mouthfeel is smooth. There is certainly not added much sugar in this brew. Its a light stout, but sometimes its nice with a non imperial beer. Light and subtle in some situations, can be quite wonderful. The balance is perfect, and i find it very drinkable.

Noctilucus (106) - All over Belgium, BELGIUM - NOV 13, 2010
Bought at Drankenhandel Geers. Very, very dark brown beer (or black if you will) with a thick layer of beige-coloured foam. Solid taste of malts, slightly roasted flavour and pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Nose of butterscotch and roasted malts. All in all it weighs a little light but that’s partly due to its low alcohol content (6.3% ABV)

This is the second time I’ve tried it, and I’m glad to say my first impressions were upheld: Brasserie de Bellevaux Black is excellent. It’s super dark, burnt malty and sharply bitter yet somehow smooth at the same time. It has notes of clove, liquorice and mace. The alcohol is not overpowering at 6.3%, but it gives the beer just enough lightness for the delicate tastes to take flight over your tongue
