This is the second time I’ve tried it, and I’m glad to say my first impressions were upheld: Brasserie de Bellevaux Black is excellent. It’s super dark, burnt malty and sharply bitter yet somehow smooth at the same time. It has notes of clove, liquorice and mace. The alcohol is not overpowering at 6.3%, but it gives the beer just enough lightness for the delicate tastes to take flight over your tongue

(Bottled, BBE 10/2011) Hazy, very dark brown color with a firm, lasting, tanned and lacy head. Strong aroma of licorice, anise, roasted and smoked malt - even whiskey-like notes. Flavor is roasted-malty and smoky-peaty with sweetish dried-fruitiness. Not too burned or ashy. Medium to full body with quite high CO2. Another success from this brewery. If I could change something, I’d give this a bit more body and lower the CO2 level. But at this ABV level, this is excellent work, comparable to Fuller’s London Porter and Old Engine Oil. 5246

Bottle at home. Very dark pour, thick solid tan head. Aroma of autumn leaves, fireplace, tobacco and some brandy. Very unique and interesting. Flavor is tobacco, varnish, antique furniture and burnt malts. Strange and interesting brew. I like it.

Bottle from Beer Planet. Jet black pour with a beige head which dissipates slowly. Aromas of chocolate, licorice, coconut(?), brown sugar, some coffee notes. Sweet ’n’ spicy flavours of coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, vanilla. Sweet and hoppy finish. Very dry in the aftertaste. Nice.

Bottle @ home. Aroma is hoppy, stouty, some spices, roasted malt. Very nice and full. Flavour is roasted malt, touch of caramel sweetness, some hop bitterness, long lingering smoky roasty finish. Thinnish but fitting palate. Nice one.
