3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 pootzboy (1284) - Hawgville, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 3, 2010
Bottle;
Pours a hazed orangey-copper color with a 2 finger sticky cap.
Aroma has some roast, some toffee over citrus-floral hopping. Average mouthfeel and body.
Flavor profile is pretty much like it’s aroma. Front is roasty-toffee malting balanced with grapefruity resinous bittering, moderate drying finish ends mildly bitter.
I’ve always maintained that so-called "amber ale" is a catch all style for brewers to throw their own innovative signature into it. This one, although not bad or cheap in any way, disappoints if for nothing more than its ordinaryness. I expected more from this brewer. On the upside the ale is tasty, balanced, properly conditioned and made for sessioning.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MmmcKay (841) - Brentwood, Tennessee, USA - JUN 1, 2010
Hard to deny that this is one of the better amber ales out there. I’ve been disappointed in this style recently after it was one of my favorites in my early beer drinking years. This beer still isn’t perfect. It is lacking some complexity and the wow factor that many Bell’s brews have. It is a little heavy for the style as well. Good news is that it is almost picture perfect for the style. Good malty backbone with just a touch of sweetness are balanced perfectly with mild hops. Good darn beer for the style.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 rking (100) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - MAY 29, 2010
Im not a big fan of the amber ale style, but I have been told by so many that this is one of the best. Its good, caramel, amber colored, with a caramel toast presence with a nice hop balance. For the style its good.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 jsh12bama (599) - Alabama, USA - MAY 27, 2010
Sample at Montgomery brewfest. Pours amber with thin white head. Aroma of brown sugar. Taste of caramel malt. Just OK.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 adavis234 (278) - Columbia, South Carolina, USA - MAY 24, 2010
Growler from Greens. Color is really more an orange/brown than an amber although there are notes of red in there. Thin, off-white head. Aroma is thick caramel malt with a hint of floral hops in the background. Flavor is lighter than the aroma suggests, with floral hops up front tailing off into a bready, malt caramel finish. Good but not great. Bell’s makes better.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 elgiacomo (565) - Chickamauga, Georgia, USA - MAY 22, 2010
12oz bottle batch 9667, bottled April 2, 2010. Pours very hazy orangish-amber with a good off-white head that leaves some lacing and maintains a good cap. Aroma is some floral hops, yeast, bread, almost like homemade dinner rolls, some light fruit, caramel. One of the more aromatic Amber Ales I’ve had. Flavor is fruity, green apple, pear, maybe a little melon, a touch of citrus hops, some floral in there too. Also some bread and caramel malt. Fairly sweet. Mouthfeel is full for the style, oily, medium carbonation. This is a great Amber Ale, very glad I went with a 6-pack instead of just buying a single.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 mixmasterob (637) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - MAY 20, 2010
This one didn’t impress me. I LOVE Bell’s but their Amber fell a bit short. Aroma is of sweet caramel malts, hops are non-existent. It drinks smooth with a lot of sweetness, although not cloying. Bell’s is better than this.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 slimweebs (163) - Los Angeles, California, USA - MAY 20, 2010
This is a very average amber. I love Bell’s brewery, it is one of my favorites, but this is just a very average showing. Perhaps that is because ambers tend to be bland and unimaginative to begin with. It has a nice pour, thick lacy head, an average mildly hoppy/malty aroma with very little character. The taste was actually sweeter than the average amber, which doesn’t surprise me, as most bell’s beers I’ve tasted are sweeter than average (which works very well for IPA’s and stouts, but not ambers!). It was decent, but I wouldn’t buy it again.
