Sampled at the 2014 MBG Summer Fest. Deep black pour. Aroma is so rich. Chocolate fudge, bourbon, vanilla, and coconut. Tastes so creamy and smooth. The fudge and bourbon balance each other well. Oak-y finish. Only a hint of booziness. Drink this side by side with Black Note and this was better.

Black color with a tan head. Aroma contains chocolate, coffee, espresso, a hint of bourbon in the nose. Flavor is well balanced with some oak some chocolate and some coffee. Bells barrel aged are you fn serious? This is amazing. Overall yes !

On Tap at the Vega in Pompano Beach, FL. Is a pitch black color with a nice very dark tan head. Aroma is tar, pine oil, coco and roasted nuts. Taste is is smooth and runs you through the same flavors as the aroma. Palate is smooth. A very nice desert beer.

Silphium (3167) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - FEB 23, 2014
Draft, Roll out the Barrel Party at the Eccentric Cafe. 2010 vintage. Deep opaque brown-black body, thin brown head. Big, dense, rich nose with butterscotch, oak, vanilla, inky roast, and scorched sugars. The body starts sharp and a tad prickly with bourbon and layers of sticky-sweet raisin and prune, leading to scorched sugars, roast, and loads of tannic bitterness in the finish. Oxidized with oak notes. A huge beer but the normally syrupy body was thinner than expected, likely due to aging. Epic beer.

after a recent visit to Florida trying many craft stouts and porters this bottle really stood out, I thought it was really very special, for such a strong beer it was beautifully balanced, lovely silky smoothness, I fell in love, also worryingly drinkable for a 10.5% ABV brew

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2013 Tap: nearly black with a deep ruby hidden underneath; a thin, tan film sits atop the dark brew. Aroma is rich, milky chocolates, smooth bourbon, huge vanilla notes, lots of barrel-induced coconut, mild maple syrup, tons of oak... the aroma is this is omnipotent and awesome. Taste is full of bourbon; very smooth and not hot. Oak, sweet vanilla, smooth cocoa nibs, wavy back-end dark prunes. Very big brew, creamy mouth feel and such a presence on the nose and palate. Easy to see now that Black Note takes much of its characteristics from Expedition. This is an absolutely fantastic barrel aged stout, period.

On tap: The aroma consists of chocolate, coconut, molasses, bourbon, and some faint roast. It’s a dark brown, virtually black, with no transparency and a small tan head. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate, molasses, and a touch of vanilla. The finish has light-moderate bourbon, maple syrup, coconut, oak, and roast. It’s full bodied with soft carbonation and mouthfeel.

Swingtop shared by woodchopper on BA! Dark black pour, still some carbonation and a nice slightly boozy aroma. Flavor was more subdued than the original expedition, meld of subtle bourbon, roasted dark chocolate malt and good and creamy. Thanks for sharing this!

On tap at the source. Awesome and unexpected... Pours an almost still-like soy saucey consistency, deep and viscous but without any head whatsoever. Swirling yields leggy streaks almost resembling a mead or wine like quality... Aroma is somewhat soy sauce and bourbon with a touch of booziness. Deep and rich with a heavy profile... Flavors deviate very little but offers much more complexity than black note, albeit less smooth. Bourbon forward with smooth chocolate flavors, less muted than black note, but with a bit more of a boozy intensity. Bigger than medium bodied with adequate carbonation. Despite the heat, the flavor complexity on this is nicely executed and quite similar to bourbon county stout.
