COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bell’s Batch 5000 Ale is a smoked strong ale, brewed to celebrate Kalamazoo Brewing Company’s 5000th batch. It is brewed with 26 % German, beechwood-smoked malt. It is very lightly hopped which showcases the rich caramel tones of the malt body that balances the assertive smoke flavor throughout. Batch 5000 would be a wonderful pairing for robust cheeses, sausages and smoked salmon. While drinkable now, Batch 5000 has an ageing potential of several years. The interplay of flavors will mature and develop subtly with time. Avoid any extreme temperatures, and keep at a cellar temperature below 65 °F. Single Batch Release - January, 2002 only.

I was really looking forward to this, and I thought it was a dissapointment. Very think, I’m not sure it was even an Ale like it says on the bottle. Had a hint of carmel in it but the thickness of this was just to much for me.

Tap at Belmont Station. A: Cloudy red color, creme color head. N: Strawberry, molasses, toasted biscuit, smoke, and more smoke, BBQ sauce, hint of cider vinegar, wood, spruce, and caraway. T: Sweet and smokey. M: Medium body, no alcohol, prickly carbonation. O: I really cannot get the comparison to KC Masterpiece out of my head. There’s some otherwise good flavors here, but really, this should be used on ribs and that’s not something I particularly want to drink.

On tap at Belmont Station. Colour...murky brown with amber tones as well. Nose... Honey Baked Ham and plenty of smoky, BBQ infused brown sugar. Palate...dry, sweet and opulent with smoky, meaty goodness and backyard bonfire. The mid palate is full of smoked meat and alfalfa honey as well as dark amber maple sirop and burnt toffee. The finish long and...well...smoky.

On tap at Belmont station. Pours a dark brown red color with a small white head. A big sweet smoky nose. The flavor is big sweet malts, toffee, big smoky chocolate. Dark fruit. Like a smoked stout.

On tap at GTMW 2015, pours an unclear brown with a thin head, the aroma has a good amount of smoked meat with a slight touch of sweetness at the same time, the flavor has a heavy smoke front end with lots of meat and and sweetness at the same time, interesting.

12 oz bottle shared with Jason and Brian. The pour is a foggy brown color with a single spot of head and no lacing. The aroma is really smokey. There is a nice bacon aspect to it. It's got a nice malt underneath but the smoke controls. The flavor is much more malty with the smoke on the back end. Light bacon and a strong camp fire on the way back. Not crazy, not overly done but just enough. The mouth feel is light and slick with a decent carbonation but it falls flat. The aftertaste is lingeringly malty and smokey. Arona is smoked bacon, pork, and some malts, taste is smoke meats- bacon, pork, ham, sausage, really different, but very good. Would like them to bottle this again!

Draft to taster at the Eccentric Cafe. Looks good; a very slightly translucent very dark cola with off-white lacing. Smells and tastes malty with notes of chocolate and a mild to moderate amount of smoke. Balanced though. Mouthfeel is medium full-bodied. Enjoyable.

Cloudy dark brown beer, no real head. Tart fruits, sourish and a little acidic. Creamy smoked malt. Trace of chocolate in the background. Not hanging together for me - the tart fruit and the creamy smoke are odd bedfellows!

12oz bottle split in two in 2011. Chunky brown, unfiltered. No head. Smells quite old/aged. Woody, oxidized amber malt. Past it’s prime. Oily and sticky, still drinkable. Big smoky tones are still there, even with oxidation. Still a decent beer, the "aged" aroma really kills it though. Oily body, mouthfeel. OK..but a prime example of why beers are better fresh.

Bottle. Pours muddy brown. Nose/taste of heavy smoked malt, bacon, smoked caramel, smoked almonds, ham and molasses maple syrup. Lots of smoke. Full mouth feel. Drinking very well right now.
