awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA May 6, 2006 From Bottle. Dark maroonish tobacco colored pour with a thin ring of beige head. Fiery red hue is visible when held up to the light. Vinous port aromas accompany sherried raisins, cherry marmalade, and a tangy hops touch. A bit of a chocolate bouquet with some raspberry and dates. Wonderfully balanced beer - the rich dark fruitiness comes to the palate first before being backed up by an even transition to caramelized grapefruit hops. Some fig notes are present too, and the hops seem to be adding a slightly spicy sensation that reminds me of black pepper, cinnimon, and a smidgen of clove spice. Rich smokey flavors finish with a smack of mild nutty cheese. A bit too much alcohol heat on the finish, which is really the only small blemish on an otherwise fantastic beer. MikeMac (185), Wyandotte, Michigan, USA May 5, 2006 thanks pailhead for sharing.. Beautiful dark amber with a tan head huge aroma of mals chocolate and hops.. Flavor was dark fruit hops, carmel malt with huge amounts ofit ... CMUBEERMAN (415), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Apr 20, 2006 Yikes...this beer is a bit...huge. Pours a black red with a rich tan/greenish head. Aroma is huge...chocolate...loads and loads of it. Burnt malt, grassy hops, alocohol, raisins, sweet grape juice, caramel. Flavor is chocolate...loads and loads of it. Tons of malty and fruity sweetness, some nice balancing acidity, grassy hops, earth, spice, dried fruit. Mouthfeel is uber refined...decadent to say the least. This is a serious english style barley wine...that is sure not to quit anytime soon. tjthresh (1746), Greenfield, Indiana, USA Apr 15, 2006 Updated: Jun 5, 2007I poured this bear into a brandy snifter, and man does it look delicious. Has a chocolaty, burnt caramel, deep reddish, almost porter look to it, with a compact tan head that completely vanished. Mostly malt aroma that comes off at English toffee. and some detectable hop character for balance. Flavors of raisins, chocolate, toffee, spicy hops. Rich and meant to be savored. Easily one of the best beers I’ve ever had the pleasure to drink. It is a damn shame that this will never be made again. 1 million thank yous go to BBB63 for the unexpected treat. fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Apr 12, 2006 Dark amber to brown color. Malt aroma, mature; strong malty taste, and caramel; strong bitterness; everything is mixed well together; good powerful sample. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA Apr 8, 2006 Rich, delicious, warming barleywine. A few years of age has rounded this beer out nicley. Pours to a slightly murky, deep amber to caramel color, with a small, tan head, and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is excellent with lots of good aromas of sweet malt, toffee, some piney hop aroma, and peppery alcohol. The palate is full and lush on the tongue, with lots of big flavors of sweet malt, toffee, caramel, and plummy, estery fruit. This beer finishes with more big sweet malt, caramel, and toffee flavors up front, then ends soothing, and warming, with peppery alcohol heat that lingers. Outstanding barley wine, one to sip and savor. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Mar 12, 2006 Bottle: Courtesy of SuIIy via trade. Aroma of moderate citrus hops with caramel, chocolate, hints of banana bread, and a touch of alcohol. Pours a reddish-brown with a big tan head with very good retention and great lacing. Lots of caramel with light hints of chocolate and light banana bread. Well balanced citrus hop finish which I can only assume has mellowed quite a bit over time. I imagine this was very hoppy when fresh. Mourthfeel is very sticky and syrupy. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Mar 10, 2006 #250! What a treat! Murky brown hue. Slight reddish tint to the edges. Ring of off white head. Sweet malt nose with notes of molassis, prunes, residual sugar, vanilla oakiness, and a slight bit of bitter chocolate. Full bodied but still with a lively effervescence and a nice alcohol warmth. It does have a long drying finish with bitter notes. Initial flavors of sugar and malts. Cloying sweetness. Followed by the alcohol whiskyish middle that warms the body and evolves from the sweet to the bitter. The chocolate and cocoa notes also appear somewhere around here. The finish is dry and bitter, but with a nice citrus and piney, berry undertone. The more I delve in, the more a cocoa note permeates. But it fades as quickly as it appears. Good cola note and a figgy character. Fantastic brew! This is one of my favorite styles and this is among the best I’ve had. But being from the Bell’s Brewery, it doesn’t surprise me in the least!
