Has a severe malty start and a sickly sour finish, not hopsy enough and does not balance flavors though it is unendingly complex on the tongue. Needs a couple years to be drinkable to the extent of enjoying rather than tolerating this beer. WeissGuy (10), Eugene, Oregon, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 24, 2004 Big, strong aroma of malt, alcohol and hops. Mostly sweet malt and alcohol. Pours a brownish red. Light carbonation, but a thick, tight collar of foam forms and clings to the side of the glass. Taste: big and bold. Lots of sweet malt up front. Some bitterness on the sides of the tongue in the middle. Sweetness shows up again at the start of the finish, and hops, along with warming alcohol show up at the end of the finish. Sweet, somewhat fruity, almost vinuous. Complex and getting better as it ages. heemer77 (4303), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 22, 2004 Very dark red and brown coloring. Almost no head. The aroma is oak, maple syrup on pancakes and a little alcohol. The taste has pancakes, maple, pears and oranges. A nice sticky mouthfeel. This is very solid and should continue to age and get even better. MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 22, 2004 poured a crimson red w/ a thin soap head smelled sweet w/ hints of alcohol.. reminded me of maple syrup a little... extremly rich and creamy. The flavor was very sweet w/ a little alcohol burn on my lips and a warm swallow... the flavor was hard to decipher beyond that but I would suggest hints of carmel.. I loved this beer! rudolf (1758), Buffalo, New York, USA
