dberger624 (1028), Phila, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 20, 2004 Bottled at a RB gathering in Phily. Very good beer. This had a belgian dubbel taste it. Godd malt flavor. Couldn't really taste the alcohol. Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA Feb 18, 2004 I have let this one sit a couple of months. Pours a somewhat opaque dark reddish-amber with virtually no head or lacing. Strong malt and caramel aroma, along with a touch of fruit. Full-bodied with an assertive malt flavor. Warming alcohol, caramel and hops flavors, as well as a hint of port wine. The finish is a little on the harsh side so I think this would benefit from some additional aging. Still this is a solid Barley Wine. Aubrey (2773), Denver, Colorado, USA Feb 15, 2004 Dark burgundy and murky. Sweet, molasses-like nose. Very thick and chewy. Aromatic, sharp, hoppy-spicy, and malty. A big sweetness tangles with a big bitterness, and it was fun to watch the two fight for the title. HUGE black licorice notes throughout, which seemed to dominate the beer. Enjoyed it though. jskendzel (602), Washington DC, USA Feb 13, 2004 Picked up over winter trip to MI: very thick, rich. Intense malty frutiness present, especially darker plum notes. ALcohol evident. Needs some time, but I couldn't wait to try it. Will definitely gain character through the years. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Feb 13, 2004 This bottled brew from BBB63, whom we thank here, poured a medium sized head of mostly lasting light brown colored finely sized bubbles that left behind a fair lace. The body was hazy and dark brown colored with suspended carbonated bubbles within it. The aroma was malty with notes of caramel raisin grass and dough. It was kind of strange and definately different. The mouth feel was strong and vinuous with some caramel malt notes, smooth yet vinuous and has a strong caramel malt flavor. BrianO (138), Ambler, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 13, 2004 Deep mahogony, slightly cloudy, with off-white head. Aroma is strong of malt, dark caramel, and alcohol.
Excellent brew. Thick, syrupy, chewy, mouthfeel with a deep dark caramel flavor. Reminds me of 3rd Coast Old Ale but with more caramel and less bitter. hotstuff (3175), Indiana, USA Feb 12, 2004 Thanks to BBB63 for this fine beer. It poured a small sized tan head that was creamy and smooth and it contained fine-small sized bubbles that fully dissipated. The body was carbonated and the hue was reddish-brown. The nose was malty, lightly hoppy, sweet, caramel, and port. The flavor was sweet, bitter, malty, and hoppy with a bit of an aftertaste. The mouthfeel was tingly, thick and chewey. This beer had sparse lacing. Barley Wine beer is not one of my favorite styles of beer, but I must admit that I enjoyed this one. Thanks again, BBB63! JFGrind (1346), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 12, 2004 Sampled at the RB Philly Gathering. I actually felt a bit guilty drinking this barley wine so early in it's life. Nice mahogany body with small long lasting head. Flavor was complex sweet malt and a strong hop finish. Excellent example of an American style barleywine.
