Pours copper with a nice head aroma of fruits malts honey hops chocolate just a great beer well done northernbrews (18), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Jun 6, 2008 Had this as part of the Batch 4000 - 8000 tasting we had 9/22/07.
I received this bottle from Mentor via trade. Thanks Paul for this rare ass bottle.
Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a slight orange tint. The thin head fades to leave some lacing on the glass.
Aroma: This smells real nice. The aroma is still pretty intense considering the age. There is mostly piney hops with a little bit of orange and citrus too. It’s pretty inviting.
Flavor: Starts with some nice malt flavors followed by the pine and orange hops. As this warms, there is a hint of some sweet fruit (maybe cherries?). The hops come by in the finish.
Palate: The hops and malts hang around for quite a bit. You can still taste the hops after a while. This goes down super smooth. The hops and malt balance very well. I can’t believe this is 10.5%. A sixer of this (hey I can dream) would be no problem.
Overall: The best barleywine I’ve ever had. I would have loved to try this fresh. I imagine the hop flavors were more intense. I wish Larry would make this a seasonal, but I won’t hold my breath. I can’t wait to see how this holds up in a few years when our 4000 - 9000 tasting takes place. I would recommend trading for this, it’s that good.
Thanks again Paul.
douglas88 (1556), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA May 31, 2008 Bottle shared by Eric. Thanks man. Pours a light copper with a medium head that borders on orange/ light brown. The aroma was just amazing; tons of fruit, rich malts, honey covered hops and just a hint of bourbon. The taste was perfectly matured; a smooth malt, tons of brown sugar and creamy fruit flavors. Just great, as I expect from Bells. The hops presence was fairly subdued, but other flavors came to the fore. Just great, well made and so good. 10.5%...no way. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA May 26, 2008 Bottle. This is an awesome treat. Pour a brown liquid and is a little murky. Aromatics is sweet malt, chocolate, dark fruit. Taste was similar with a nice woodiness present. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 17, 2008 Pours a dark rusty brown with a medium sized beige head. Aroma of tangy caramel, dark fruity esters and hops. Taste of caramel, grapefruit, dark fruit, toffee and molasses. Quite hoppy. Excellent !! TheEpeeist (1429), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 24, 2008 12 oz bottle. Thanks Adrian. Deep brown with traces of tan froth. Nose of dark caramel, smoky plum and salty molasses. Very light carb with a silky body but you can feel the heat. Taste is chocolate caramel and candied grapefruit peel. Tails off with bittersweet chocolate and grass. Reminds me of German chocolate cake. I even detected some coconut. blankboy (3157), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 18, 2008 Rating 2300! Bottle courtesy of kp. What a rare treat this is, I never thought I’d get to try this -- big thanks to kp!! Pours, well, gorgeous! A cascading dark reddish-brown with an average size lasting beige head and a bunch of little floaties. Aroma has lots of earthy malt, lots of fruit and lots of hops -- all so well balanced, along with some alcohol, chocolate and toffee -- just wonderful! Flavour of dark fruit, hops, caramel malt, brown sugar, a bit of alcohol and a long(ish) bitter finish. Nice balance between the hops and malt. What’s the abv on this? I’m sure it’s probably high but it goes down sooo smooth. Medium to full bodied, thick mouthfeel. kp, you are one generous person, thanks again. This was amazing -- I loved it!
