railcat1 (578), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 29, 2008 I have been sitting on this and decided to try and was it enjoyable.I am not a big barley wine fan but this was a nice sweet malty with a kinda smokey finish,it had a very thin head that faded quickly overall not bad at all.CHEERS! Dubbercody (214), Vancouver, Washington, USA Jan 26, 2008 12 oz bottle. Dark brown/caramel color. Off white head that leaves a white lace around the glass. Smells like malt, caramel, and dark dried fruits. Taste is pretty thick, roasty, sweet, malty and lightly effervescent even at this point.
While not my favorite style of beer, I liked this one quite a bit and respect how it falls into the style. Nice beer, thanks to whomever traded this to me. JK (2945), Richfield, Minnesota, USA Jan 25, 2008 Sampled at the 2008 Twin Cities winter gathering. Sweet wih lots of hops and carmelized sugar. Candy like finish. Dark brown color. Lots of hops but also sweet malt. Very good. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Jan 15, 2008 Sampled at MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering in Maplewood, MN and supplied by hellomynameis. From a 12-oz bottle pours a hazy dark caramel brew with a thin off-white head that slowly dissipates to a fine film and ring. Aroma of caramel malt, roasted nuts, a touch of raisin and dark pitted fruits. Taste is medium to full bodied, light carbonation with flavors of roasted caramel malt, raisins, a touch of candi sugar and even some chocolate. Finish is smooth, semi-sweet with a dry caramel and raisin aftertaste. joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA Jan 15, 2008 MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering. Thanks to whomever brought this one. This was the weeakest of the lot. Nice sweet toffee, brown sugar, raisens, and dark fruits on the nose, but the palate kind of falls off a touch. Not too much heat, but it lacked the amazing complexity of 4000, 5000, and 7000. jason (1620), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 13, 2008 Bottle. Big thanks to TheBeerCellar for sending me this one. Wow what a Barley Wine. I was waiting for a moment when I walked down into my cellar to pick out a beer for the evening and deciding that this was the beer to drink. It makes me sad but not too sad because I enjoyed the hell out of it. Enough carbonation to give a little head. Big caramel and nutty flavor, rich malt and perfect balance of everything in this beer. This is what I expect from a Barley Wine and wish I could find some more that are similar to this one. BDR (2139), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Jan 12, 2008 Solid dark brown color. Still body. It’s got that dry hoppy nose with a faintly sdweet that I associate with a well aged barley wine. Slightly sweet body with a dry finish. shadey (1496), Rochester, New York, USA Jan 12, 2008 12oz bottle aged a little over 4 years in a cool dark cellar. Poured into a big brandy snifter, this is a pretty barleywine. The color is a murky purplish brown with a head of swirling white creamy bubbles. The aroma is really quite rich. I see earlier ratings that describe grapefruit hoppines. That isn’t here in the aged bottle. This is all caramel and chocolate. The aromas as well as the flavors are constantly swirling and changing. This is really a sexy beer. The alcohol is there, but it is just part of the luscious experience. Sexy, yet sophisticated.
