OSLO (825), Perth, Australia Feb 11, 2008 [Bottle, thanks Skyview!] Pours black with a dark tan head. Aroma is raisin, coffee, and roasted malt. Taste is bigger on the coffee, with some hops and chcolate. Mouthfeel is quite thick. This was a good beer, although maybe not quite as good as I had expected. Of all the beers we tasted this night, this was one of the ones that I was most looking forward to--unfortunately it also ended up being one of the few beers I have ever spilled. Awesome. In need of a re-rate on this one, not sure if it will happen though. brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Feb 11, 2008 Pours opaque black and syrupy. An exaggerated pour near the end of the bottle aroused not only an upswell of ultra-fine brown bubbles, but several chunks of sediment.
The chunks splashed a small amount of inky brown liquid onto the counter as the thick, dense head rose to an inch and a half.
Aromatics are filled with alcohol-laden chocolate syrup, coffee extract, black licorice, and undertones of orangy citrus.
The mouthfeel is thick, chewy and doughy. Very large.
The pallet is a monster of numbing alcohol, cocoa-dusted tar, Kahlua reduction, and coffee liquer.
Finishes with lingering bitter chocolate, charred malt, and vineous heat.
What a bruiser, you can tell this one’s at 12%.
With the alcohol being as apparent as it is, the brew is reminiscent of a barrel-aged example.
gotbeach (128), San Diego, California, USA Feb 9, 2008 Bottle@Dr.Bills. Poured dark with a thin head. Hints of coffee, cherry, and bourbon. Sweet, sticky and dry on the palate. bikesandbeers (468), Los Angeles, California, USA Feb 8, 2008 sampled at the San Diego Strong Ale Festival Nov 2008, an event shared with what seemed liked hundreds of ratebeerians and enjoyed mostly through a straw, since my face was a bloody mess of scabs and stitches. this came from the RB table full of bottles. I belive JohnC brought this bpottle, and a little bit spill on the table with BBB3 proceed to lick up... If i was closer to the spill and had working lips, I would have done the same. This beer pour thick with a great choclate aroma. the flavor was slightly roasty choclate with some carmel and coffee, it finsihed slightly bitter and left the most amzing feeling in my mouth. Wonderful! beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Feb 6, 2008 Updated: Nov 30, 2008Thanks to Ughsmash for this brew. Pours black with a brown head. Big sweet roasty fruity nose. Balanced.. no, flavorful... yes. Big rich coffee note up front, cherry and chocolate notes towards the finish with almost a bit of tartness to it. Alcohol isn’t present, palate is thick and cloying, but a solid warmer for sure. This beer is a nice cold day sipper. elmatador00 (518), j-action-ville, North Carolina, USA Feb 6, 2008 Thanks to SS. Poured a dark murky brown with a thin reddish tan head. Aroma is mostly nut and cocoa. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, nuts, caramel, dark fruit, and small hop presence. Finishes creamy and silky. Alcohol is pleasantly enjoyable. Great brew. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jan 31, 2008 Pungent aroma that smells of maple syrup, coffee, and dark bitter chocolate. This beer is black with little head to speak of and almost no lacing. Flavor is a black licorice, espresso, and chocolate...sugary sweet with alcohol present.
