Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Dec 14, 2005 Pours pitch black with huge brwon head that fades rather quickly. Nice oily lacing. Lots of piney hop up front with roasted grain background. Hints of chocolate and dark fruits. Roasted grain and chocolate dominate the initial flavor, then turns to all piney hops. Long lingering aftertaste of bitter roasted grain. Can’t wait til these get a couple years on them SpringsLicker (2041), Tennessee, USA Dec 14, 2005 Thanks to MrFacto for this one!
A large creamy head tops off this black bodied stout.
Strong coffee aroma with maybe a hint of smoke.
Moderately sweet with loads of roast barley bitterness that carry all the way into the long finish. Wonderful creaminess that coats the tongue. Improves as it warms and one that will most likely improve with age as well, if you are lucky enough to have some to cellar. 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA Dec 14, 2005 Bottle: Holy schnikes this is black, large brown foamy head, nice lacing. One of the darker ones out there, at least that I have seen. Roasted malt nose, cocoa, apple skin, pixie stix like candish aroma. WOW, smooth is what I first notice. Rich malt background, nice hop up front, blends well, fairly sweet, somewhat candyish, touch of soy, fig, light fruit (apple, pear), and definitely not feeling like 12%. Only a slight creeping of alcohol after the finish. Body and mouthfeel are big, but not as viscous as I thought based on its color depth. Heat approaches well after the finish. Hops and cocoa linger, with a sweet lactose like base. Great stuff!!! One of the best stouts that Bell’s has made.   Many thanks to Schroppfy for sending me this one!
Sregnar35 (729), Rotterdam, New York, USA Dec 12, 2005 Excellent looking beer to start things off. Jet black with a nice brown head that really lasts. Aroma is typical impy stout, sweet, warm, raisins, moderate hops. Flavor was just a hair to sour in the finish for my taste, but still an excellent beer. acertain (249), Seattle, Washington, USA Dec 12, 2005 Looks great. Smells great. Feels great, but with a bitter mollassas aftertaste that I couldn’t stomach. Crash (447), Macomb, Illinois, USA Dec 12, 2005 Poured dark black with a foamy head and good lacing. Aroma was roasted chocolate that was quite nice. I was expecting a bit more out of the taste but, it was good overall. DYCSoccer17 (2187), Davis, California, USA Dec 11, 2005 Bottle at Rich’s YeHa 05. Chocolate, roasty aroma with some mild booziness present in the nose. Almost a chalk-dust aroma present as well. Opaque, dark-brown color with a nice frothy yellowish tan head. Extremely roasty and chocolate-like to start. Finishes very dry and very roasty. Pretty unbalanced and straight-forward with all the roastiness. Lacks complexity. beerguy101 (3861), Newark, California, USA Dec 10, 2005 This imperial stout pours a dark black color from a 12 oz bottle. Small white foamy head. Aroma is chocolate and coffee. A medium bodied Imperial Stout. Malts are roasty, chocolate and very sweet. Touch of hoppiness, grapefruit and citrus. Very smooth taste. Good balance. Excellent beer. Thanks to JohnC for sharing this one. Mouthfeel is very full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a touch of hops.
