Aubrey (2772), Denver, Colorado, USA Dec 6, 2005 Updated: Oct 9, 2008Very dark. Velvety and oily mouthfeel with some weight. Zippy-snappy sourness. Bursting with complex and vibrant aromas. Rich, dark malts exude with syrup, molasses, black licorice, baker’s chocolate, and coffee left on the burner too long. Warming alcohol. Big, lasting bitterness. Very hoppy throughout, with strong grass complemented by delicate tea. Overall, I really enjoyed it. RERATE (forgot I rated this already), rating with more age to the beer: Very dark and mysterious. Deep, tightly packed tan head. Rich, inviting nose. Thick, oily, velvety texture. Chalky cocoa, rich raisins, black licorice, luscious dark chocolate, deeply roasted grains and zingy hop bitterness. Wow, this beer has some real depth and quite a bit of complexity. Warming and cozy alcohol soothed the throat. Great beer. SwedeDog (364), Windsor, Connecticut, USA Dec 6, 2005 12 oz bottle from CharlesDarwin. The best way I could describe this beer is that it’s like a miniaturized World Wide Stout. (And that’s not a bad thing) Most people compare this to the Expedition Stout, but this one has more in common with WWS than any other. Great aroma of milk chocolate covered cherries, licorice, molasses and whiskey. Very thick and full aroma, one of the best in an impy stout. Ah, but that first sip is a wallop. This one is still very hot. The whiskey greets your tongue and instantly numbs it, making way for the immense sweetness to follow. More chocolate covered cherries, more toffee, more licorice and even some slight hoppiness. Very alcoholic mouthfeel. Not as roasty as I’d like in an impy. By the end of the bottle, the sweetness of this one takes over and is a bit too much, however, this one will be damn near perfect in a year or two. Good thing Tom sent two of these beauties. Thanks, Tom! MartinT (5026), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 6, 2005 Updated: Dec 27, 2007The Lure: Plump grapes and blueberries adorn the sensuous coffee beans and seductive molasses. Fruitier than their Expedition, and less hoppy, but eminently rich and carefully designed.
The Festivities: An enveloping roasted malt flavor and bitterness casts a white spell on some healthy resinous hops. Mint leaves top the molasses, and an absolutely decadent body massages the mouth’s every pore. Utterly hedonistic, this chocolatey imperial stout is yet another Bell’s masterpiece.
Transcendence: Bathing in a treasure chest full of riches. Odeed (1666), Bakersfield, California, USA Dec 5, 2005 Updated: Aug 25, 2007(bonus brew by way of brewso AND MY 600TH RATING!)well here i am @ rating 600...its a special time so i need a special beer right?well this beer is damn near perfect for the occasion.so i dumped a bit of the batch 7000 into my stone impy stout glass.as it poured it looked just like expedition stout.thick and super black.although i did manage to get a little head out of this baby.a thin 1/4 dark brown head swam to the top, although it soon sunk beneath the black sea.as i raised the glass to my nose and took a swift sniff, this is what i could catch.first off was a bit of sweet chocolate, followed by black liquorice, fudge, alcohol, and cherries.the first sip changed in falvor so fast it was even hard to catch anything, let alone the complexity of the palate.on the second sip i could gather beef jerkey, cherries, smoke, chocolate, leather, and roasted malts.even 10 to 15 seconds after a sip ,bits of the beer still slid down my throat.the mouthfeel was super thick and the palate went on for days....what more can i say? argo0 (6842), Washington DC, USA Dec 5, 2005 (12oz bottle) Small tan head atop a solid black body. Aroma is medium sweet, molasses, coffee, pistachio, black cherry, light chocolate. Taste is sweet, coffee, chocolate, roasty, date, some pine, earthy/herbal. Some alcohol warming in the finish, but not overpowering despite the ABV. Creamy full body, remarkably drinkable. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Dec 5, 2005 2x12 oz bottles shared with MartinT, tiggmtl, Rastacouere, beerbuzzmontreal and Yowie. Had this just after two vintages of Expedition, so comparisons are inevitable...and appropriate. Pours viscous, opaque motor oil, with just a small ring of lasting brown foam...big, big roasty nose offering bitter almonds, vanilla and espresso, perhaps not as complex as Expedition or balanced but still inviting...more is going on in the body, nuts again and roasty, bitter coffee and chocolate, but also odd notes of mint and sour apples...very charred and burnt to finish, again less balanced than it’s lil’ brother but just as well-made and memorable. Awesome. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Dec 4, 2005 (Bottle) Pours a black body with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and mild hops. Flavor of charred and roasted malt. turbo (1254), Arizona, USA Dec 4, 2005 Bottle poured black as oil with a huge, thick, creamy, chocolate head and heavy lacing that lasted throughout the entire beer.
Rich roasty chocolate malt and molasses aroma.
Flavor is rich and thick, chocolate, coffee, burnt malts with a nice heavy body. Alcohol is very well hidden with just a taste in the finish.
Good shit maynard!
