tectactoe (1851) - Michigan, USA - SEP 8, 2014
Bottle: Vibrant, red-ish copper with a quickly fading, lightly ecru film on top. Aroma of stale toasted malts, floral hops, mild fruitiness thatís hard to pinpoint (maybe raisin or grape?) & a little bit of caramel. Toasty. Caramel is more mild on the palate (read: not as sweet). Flavors of toasted oats, sweet toffee, herbal & leafy hops, & slight dark fruit come into play. Again, I get a slight metallic staleness that sometimes seems to plague certain barley wines for me. Medium bodied, actually a little thin for the style. Itís not bad, but Iíve come to expect much more than this from Bells.

madvike (2728) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 30, 2014
On tap at Maduro for Great Taste Eve - Pours brown with a filmy off white head. Nose is malty, dry, and grainy, smooth, with very little hopping. Taste is lots of grai, with barley, oats, a little grass/herbal bite, and a touch of honey. Smooth, well-carbonated, and medium-thick. Smooth and solid.

This poured a lighter brown with a beige head. Aroma of.mild citrusy hops, caramel, toast and light booze. Flavor was less choppy than expected, some bitterness, complex fruity and.candied malts and light booze a nice blend or American and English style barleywine.

Amber copper pour with a soft haze and one finger of creamy sandy tan head. Very nice aroma, candylike sweetness and caramel notes with a lightly toasted quality and some burnt sugar. Clean with a moderate bitterness. Malty and lightly sweet with a good balance. Piney hops to finish.

ansermadide (1520) - Kyle, Texas, USA - JUL 24, 2014
Reddish dark orange in color with a light brown/cream colored head, itís mostly clear - but a little dark. It smells dirty with a distinct smoky, almost peat-like roasted maltiness and a slightly burnt caramel character. This is superbly unique. Itís smooth and soft in the mouth, with burnt caramel up front and a mostly thin body. Some sticky sweetness gets left behind on the lips. It actually makes the lips stick together just a little. Overall, this is a very sessionable barleywine thatís as easy as a light-bodied Scotch or English ale. Itís very nice and although BeerAdvocate documents this as an American Barleywine it seems very much an English-style barleywine to me.

Bottle thanks to northernbrews for sharing. Cloudy copper pour with a small head that fades to a messy ring. Aroma is stale hops, caramel, brown sugar, and toast. Tastes smooth. Sweet caramel and toffee. Toasted bread and light stale citrus hops. Decent but I expect more from Bells.

Bottle: The aroma consists of caramel, toffee, citrus, and fruit. It pours a transparent amber with a small off-white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. The flavor starts with camel, toffee, and light fruit. The finish has some aged citrus hops. Itís medium bodied with soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall, it tastes more like an aged IPA than a Barley Wine.

Bottle shared tonight by Michael, thanks for the opportunity! Pours a slightly hazy light brown dark amber color with a smallish off white head that dissipates slowly. Aromas of brown sugar and caramel with a bit of light fruit and light floral hop. The flavor follows the aroma quite well rice dark sugary maltiness with a hint of alcohol fruit and just enough hop flavor to balance. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation. Nice barleywine, Iím glad I got to try it.
