A smooth, toasty brown ale, Best Brown Ale is a mainstay in our fall & winter lineup. With hints of caramel and cocoa, the malt body has the depth to stand up to cool weather, but does not come across as heavy. This balancing act is aided by the generous use of American hops.

Pours brown. Nose is hops and toasted nuts. The taste is very smooth, rich, nutty, malty... odd and interesting at the same time.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, my bottle. Slightly hazy deep mahogany with a smallish beige head. Sweet roast caramel/chocolate malt aroma, a little yeasty, some green hops, hints of lactose. Taste is also roast sweet malt, quite a nutty and dusty character, tries to finish dry and a little bitter. Average body, somewhat flat, lightly syrupy - for a brown, itís okay - could have more character, but it doesnít anger me like some do.

Off taps at Capital Ale House. Dark amber brown with small fluffy white head. Slight roast and carmel malt aroma. Medium full creamy body with light carbonation. Rich roasty rather sweet with touch of fruityness. Finish is fairly sweet with a bit of residual earthy hop bitterness. Pushing a stout...and very tasty.

Pours lighter than other browns, but decent looking opaque ruddy brown with a thin halo of a cream colored head. The nose is sweet and kind of crystal malt like. This carries into the flavor along with an earthy grain like flavor. Decent dry finish.

Bottle. Large, frothy, light brown head that stuck around for quite a while. Nice lacing. Slightly cloudy with some fine particulate. Heavy malt aroma, with some caramel, toastiness and nuttiness. Very light on the hops with almost no perceptible aroma. Flavor was high on the caramel and toasty flavors, with little hop flavor or bitterness. Just enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Medium, creamy body with a nice, soft carbonation. A somewhat sticky finish.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2009 Iím generally not a brown drinker, but this is pretty nice. Not much aroma, but a good bit of malt and more hops to it than a lot of browns. Kind of fizzy, though.

Smells buttery and toasty like a light toffee with light summer fruits along for the ride. Pours a handsome dirty river orange-brown with white head. Flavor gives some hints of clove and other robust spiciness to go with very present wheat toast. Great mouthfeel that is velvety all the way through. Solid brown that is tasty and easy to enjoy. Thanks Bells. 2009 12oz.

On tap. Pours deep red brown with a medium off-white head. Aroma is lightly malty, specifically caramel. First sip is caramel and toasted malts, and at this point I thought for a moment that I might have accidentally gotten the Amber Ale. After that, though, itís more definitely a brown ale, with roasted malts coming on more strongly. An alright brown ale.
