Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The result is a malty harmony of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruit notes, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Bottle pours black with thin tan ring. Aroma bourbon and oak. Taste sweet roast malts with slight chorale and coffee, with bourbon and oak. Finish bourbon and oak. Palate creamy and almost thin but overall OK with an alcohol burn.

A very straightforward bourbon barrel stout but done well. Easier drinking than many of the genre.

Appearance: Pours a motor oil; settles in glass with a barrel-beige head and espresso body. Smell: Bourbon and raising swirling with melted chocolate. Mouth/Palate: Chewy chocolate cake with slight carbonation that diffuses across palate, leaving a clean, crisp, and dry taste and the suggestion that this isnít a very syrupy beer. Taste: Chocolate, cherry, and a subtle espresso note hide the booziness. So, too, does the carbonation.

Iím not a "sugary" bourbon barrel-aged stout fan. This reminds me of Bourbon County Stout (Goose Island in case I got the name wrong), but with far less-cloying sweetness. Itís decent, coming from a dude whoís not a fan of the style. I had to try it, though, because it was from Bellís.

Screw you, this is opaque. Warming whiskey settles pleasantly into sugary cocoa and coffee laced with licorice. Really good at room temp.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2013 Little to no carbonation. Pours black with a very thin tan head. Nose is full of chocolate and bourbon. The taste is very smooth, almost a cream texture. A very good blend. Taste is of bourbon, chocolate, coffee and a slight vanilla. Very well done.

A softened Bourbon boom on the nose. (on tap/from notes) A bit bit bit too creamy sweet, esp. for the style, though not cloying - indeed, their is not much of a burn, but plenty of bourbon flavor on the palate. Overall, I canít tell you what itís missing. Dangerously close to "it canít get any better"... but I, for one, wish they just barreled the expedition. That being said, I greatly appreciate that there is a brewery out there doing a beer like this, and weíre lucky itís Bellís.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2014 There is very minor carbonation in my glass. The color is pure black and there is a beauty to it. An aroma fills my nose with sweet bourbon, coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, and oak. The taste is impressive. I get a smooth cream like texture. In the flavor I taste all that I received from the aroma. The beverage is not bitter but has a slight dry finish. The finish also leaves a warming feel and does not impact the palate much. Overall this is a fantastic creation. *Update. Aging the blacknote 2yrs has changed it minimally but what stands out the most for me is the finish. It has become slightly more bitter than I remember and it the dryness has increased. The blacknote is still a hell of a brew and Iím glad I saved a bottle to age.
