COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The result is a malty harmony of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruit notes, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2014 On tap at eccentric cafe. Dark black pour into snifter, half inch of beige head that settled quickly. Malty scent, brown sugar and molasses. Thick mouth feel with little carbonation. Very sweet malty, mature flavor: maple syrup, molasses, dark fruits and brown sugar. Finish is sour and a bit bitter, mouth was a little tingly. Very nice. April 2014 update: enjoyed 2/28/12 bottle. Super rich, super boozy aroma. Powdery, corn-y bourbon aroma, powdery Carmel is strong. Very low carbonation, somewhat thin mouthfeel, numbs the tongue on finish very slightly. Supremely rich flavor, heavy on the Carmel and molasses, dark fruits and rich dark chocolate or cocoa. Amazingly smooth and well blended compared to other BBA stouts.

Bottle. Pours with pitch black hued body. Glass coating, tan head. Medium retention. Aromas show medium to strong bourbon character, medium barrel vanillin, light coffee, low smoke, vanilla bean. Flavors are surprisingly smooth, bourbon, vanilla, bready. Low esters and a nicely clean roast character. Medium coffee. Full bodied, lower carbonation. Quite good!

~10 oz tulip/goblet type glass draft at Martin City Brewing Company. The aroma is soft cocoa sweetness, along with Bourbon and wood barrel notes, and a nice amount roast. The taste is big sweetness, vanilla and cocoa, then moves to strong barrel, and a strong sweet alcohol finish. The flavors are well integrated, big and bold. The roast, cream and bourbon booze linger. The Palate is medium bodied, low carbonation, and an oily texture leading to the finish.

On tap at Bryant Lake Bowl in September. Pours deep black. Oily, viscous, small tan head. Aroma has a bit of booziness, dark fruits, slight roastiness and sweet. I love the sweetness that is then cut by the barrel. Long sweet finish. I love this beer. One of my favorites

Bottle, Nice dark pour, tan foam and ight lacing. Aroma of molasses, dark fruits, bourbon, some chocolate. Taste is sweet, lots of molasses, some vanilla, dark fruits, really interesting flavor. Palate is rich, really creamy but maintains good drinkability, really well done.

Bottle 750ml, 602/1081 Pours very dark brown (black), with almost no head (beige). Aroma is of roasted malt, porto, dark fruits, bourbon, chocolate, alcohol. Taste is of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, alcohol. Very sligth smoke. Warming alcohol, booze. Palate: Srong body, but not that thick. Very creamy-like, yet drinkable (dangerously). Overall: Intense, complex, yet fairly drinkable. Very impressive.

Bottle (750 ml) # 602/1081. Traded by Sarro, thanks Kyle! Black with nod head and no lacing, which is understandable for a bourbon barrel beer. Aroma is wonderfully complex with notes of bourbon and vanilla (but nothing overwhelming), porto, raisins, figs, caramel, wood, roasted malt and the list goes on. Taste is about the same but on the softer side. Mouthfeel is amazingly creamy, especially for a bourbon barrel imperial stout. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Quite drinkable for the style. Wonderful BB RIS, especially regarding to aroma and mouthfeel.

10/20 on tap @ProofBrewingCompany. Pour is thick, opaque, black. Dark creamy colored head. Aroma consists of toffee and hints of bourbon. Mouthful is chocolately, toffee, and not so subtle taste of the bourban barrel. Finish is ultimately coffee dominant. ABV is well hidden, but not invisible. If only this gem wasn’t so rare.
