Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The result is a malty harmony of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruit notes, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Bottle from Alex @ Binny’s @ Willowbrook (thanks brutha!). Pours the color you’d expect of an Imperial Stout (or even a Guinness for that matter): a deep, dark opaque brown-black, but with a medium espresso colored head that dissipated fairly soon after pouring. Nose is earthy, barrel, brownie batter, and something kinda like fresh roasted hazelnuts. Mouth is big and creamy, brownie batter and bourbon barrel up front, then coffee notes and some nuttiness on the back end. Super smooth -- can’t really detect the lofty ABV at all. I’ve had a few stouts over the years and some that are comparable, but this is a rare one and a real treat to find in the Chicago area.

Draft: Bourbon, walnut, and potting soil nose. Quite nice. Black, with a medium beige head. Charred oak and prune flavor. Medium body, with heat on the back end. Ugh, bourbon barrel aging.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2014 Very rich and creamy. Loaded with flavors. Lots of molasses, dark chocolate, sweet coffee, vanilla, toasted bread and of course bourbon. Hints of dark fruit, with chocolate cherries in the aftertaste. Wonderful palate, thick enough to handle a beer of this caliber.

Pretty near flawless, and if there is a flaw Im not the one to see it. Heavy musk of smoked malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Awesome taste, that never pushes or pulls too much in wrong direction with aromas and palate. Its all over your senses without exasperating anything. Bitter and a little sweet, some spice and salt. Tap at brewpub.

damn this is perfect!pours an opaque black.whith a thin brown head that qickly dissapates.minimal lacing.aroma of bourbon, chocolate, coffee and vanilla.flavor completely matches the aroma.when you smell this, you know what your about ready to taste.completely balanced.reminds me a lot of bourbon county stout other than the bourbon is a lot more balanced in the flavor.full bodied with low carbonation and an oily mouthfeel.im amazed at the lack of bitterness in this beer.not that i dont like a bitter finish but its has a slightly sweet finish with very little bitterness for an imperial stout.amazing!

Tap (2011) at the Birch for rating number 1000! Pours opaque black with a medium brown head that leaves decent lacing. Aroma is bourbon, coffee, dark roasted malt, chocolate, and a touch of vanilla. Flavor is the same, medium sweet and complex with a light coffee bitterness and just a touch of astringence. Full body, creamy mouthfeel. Warming finish from the ABV.

Draft at The Birch. Black pour with a short brown head. Aroma is sweet with strong bourbon notes, oak, vanilla, caramel, roasted malt, and chocolate. Taste is big bourbon notes, oak, vanilla, burnt caramel, dark chocolate and booze. Body is medium-full with moderate warmth and stickiness, and dense carbonation. Ends with more roasted malt, caramel, bourbon notes, oak, vanilla, brown sugar and chocolate.

Pours very dark with bluish highlights. Smells and tastes incredible - roasts, malty, chocolaty with licorice overtones.
