COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The result is a malty harmony of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruit notes, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Motor oil with a dark brown thin head. Smells like vanilla, coffe and dark caramel. The taste is pure mocha and sweet bourbon with roasted hints., Nice!

Thanks to Owen for the bottle. Pours black, very thick, slightly oily looking. Dark mocha colored head with good lacing. Nose is of bourbon, wood, roasted grains and malts. Big nose. Taste and feel are quite heavy. Get a big amount of the base beer which is quite good but quite big and filling. Lots of roasted malts, slight charred ash and a lot of Vegemite and dark chocolate. Low carbonation. Big beer. Quite heavy. Good beer though

Autumn Brew Review 2012. A thick, heavy beer. Very low carbonation, similar to Expedition in that way. Heavily roasted grain, with some sugar. There is bourbon in the aroma and as well as in the flavor. AS far as bourbon-aged beers go, it is very good, but still more bourbon than I like.

Draft sample at Big Beers. This is a top-notch brew. Well worth its lofty ratings. Dangerously drinkable for such a big beer. Molasses, brown sugar, booze and a little vanilla. Yummy.

I had a sample of this at The Steel City Big Pour in Pittsburgh this September. The beer pours out black as pitch, with a mocha head. On the nose, I picked up vanilla, caramel, and oak barrel. The flavors were butterscotch, toffee, smoky dark chocolate, and black olives (presumably from the barrel). You could definitely pick up on the bourbon too, but it wasn’t integrated into the beer as well as with other barrel-aged stouts. On the whole though, this was fantastic and I feel really lucky to have tried this.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2014 Had a tasting at Michigan brewers guild. Poured black and surprisingly thin. Smells of strong sweet chocolate. Tastes like liquid tootsie rolls. Thin mouthfeel. Too sweet. Is this what everyone was raving about? Maybe a bad keg at the tasting. Was not impressed. 2012 Re-Rate: Previously a 2.9 maybe from a bad keg? got a bottle now. Pours pitch black with a very small brown head. Aroma is heavy vanilla, licorice, chocolate and bourbon. Smells very rich. Some up front bite with medium low carbonation. Flavor of licorice at first, finishing with overwhelming chocolate and then sweet vanilla really lingering. Thick and viscous, slightly acidic with some burning alcohol goin on. Age would probably smooth it out but overall pretty awesome! Glad I got to rerate this. Another rerate here with a 2012 bottle poured on 3/22/14. Mostly similar but the booze tones down considerably now. Big anise flavors and lots of beautiful vanilla chocolate good n plenties. This is still awesome.

Taster @ Gents Bierfestival, courtesy of tderoeck. Thanks Tim! Black coloured beer with a short brown head. Strong roasted malty and extreme alcholic hinted aroma. Very creamy full palate. Finish is chocolate, dark chocolat strong taste with a longer bitter chocolat alcoholic malty ending. Very impressive.

750mL Bottle. A million, million thanks to Sean for providing this bottle to my Bachelor-party tasting of 2002-2012 Expedition Stout. It was a great way to kick the tasting off. Aroma resounded loudly with bourbon, pure and fresh, and soft. Hints of stout roast kick in, but it’s mostly a bourbon show. Flavors lean surprisingly in the Double Cream stout direction. I was picking up the mineral, charred Cedar saline quality of that portion of the blend, but lacking the rich, port-like refined sugar edge of the Expy. This is very dry for an Imperial Stout, which is greatly appreciated, but I think the bourbon is a bit overwhelming and I think the Expedition portion gets shouted out a little. Overall, it’s a very good stout and one that I’m eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to try.
