Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The result is a malty harmony of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruit notes, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

bottle shared by fred82, thanks bro! pours unclear very dark brown with a small dark beige head, some retention, shy lacing. bittersweet dark chocolate, burnt raisins, woodsy bourbon - just enough vanilla, bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup, molasses and maple syrup, bitter coffee, coffee and cream. low carbonation, medium to full body - oily and barely sticky, warming booze well integrated, unsweetened chocolatey and bitter coffee finish. delicious!

Pitch black with a dark mocha head that barely covers and disappears to a tiny ring. Aroma is big vanilla, oak coconut sweetness. Mixed at the same time with dark fruits. Raisins, plumy fig slight cherry note playing off the chocolate notes. Chocolate ranging from bakers to hints of bitter sweet to gints of milk. Slight roast as well. Taste, slight carb pop, followed by chocate, bitter chocolate mixed with coconut and bourbon. Slight woodiness. Dark fruits present a bit less in the taste, maybe more cherry if anything. Finish is slight roast and more bitter chocolate. Body is full and velvety, with a lil heat.

Just great great stuff. The nose is a little shy, I thought. Despite appropriate glassware, it nosed better from the empty bottle. Only the most subtle bourbon. Moderately thin lacing of head. Perfectly balanced palate or mouthfeel. And I mean perfect. Slightly more carbonation than your usual artisan stout, which I find to be super welcome. It really helps the flavor and texture. Warmth from alcohol, obvious light milk chocolate flavor.

12oz bottle (2014 vintage) pours oily dark brown black with almost no head. Nose is boozy strong bourbon spice and dark fruits. Taste is thick muddy roasty cocoa, boozy bourbon, heavy earthy oak, the bourbon seems to just sit on top of the stout and is not in harmony with the beer as a whole. Mouthfeel is simultaneously thin on front and back, and murky in the middle. Finish is roasty charred chocolate, hershey syrup, strong oak, bourbon. Disjointed. Not horrible but a bit of a let down after everything I had heard. Would take regular Expedition over this any day.

Thanks to gumballdust for the bottle. This is my first Black Note and needless to say, Iíve really been looking forward to cracking this one open. Pours a thick, deep deep brown with a nice one finger caramel color head. The aroma hits you as soon as you start pouring the beer. Licorice, vanilla, bourbon, and dark fruits. Very nice aroma. Flavor is complex, yet very enjoyable. Slightly spicy, coffee beans, vanilla, booze, brown sugar, dark chocolate, caramel. The mouthfeel is thick and velvety smooth. Probably has the best mouthfeel of any stout Iíve ever had. They really nailed that aspect of it. I canít imagine a stout getting much better than this.

Vintage 2014, this is a sugary sweet imperial stout. Tastes of toffee, while the bourbon barrel aging mellows out the sweetness. For a beer of this abv, it is remarkably easy drinking. Very enjoyable!

Pours black with no head. Nose is roast, dark fruits maybe cherry, touch of bourbon, burnt sugar, milk chocolate, touch milky, a bit of barrel. Taste is dark fruits, milk chocolate, cherry, bit milky, I don't taste the 11% at all. Creamy and excellent mouthfeel. This beer truly is great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
