Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The result is a malty harmony of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruit notes, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

2014 thanks to ant_wails, you da man bruh! Pours a crude black with a brown head which soon recedes to a ring around the glass. Aroma is vanilla, bourbon, coffee and raisins. Taste is vanilla, bourbon, cocoa powder and some cherry tartness on the finish. Quite hot and slightly harsh, I wish I had drank this later on this year or perhaps next but that would only be the cherry on the icing.

Beer #4 of 13 in blind tasting.
2012 bottle, more than 2 years old This was the second beer in what was supposed to be an unadulterated imperial stout tasting. I have had this a few times and I never liked it. Fortunately, blinded I still did not like it. Poured headless and thinnest of the beers available. I thought this was oxidized, got lots of woody notes, and rather acidic. In hindsight, seems like I was pretty on without picking up bourbon.
Despite me having this as one of my worst beers, everyone else enjoyed it. For the aggregate it scored highest and strongly above average (0.55 standard deviation above). HOWEVER, usually a BA beer scores high in no BA imperial stout tastings. I don’t give these aggregate results much credence.

An amazing experience shared with a friend. Thank you, friend. A creamy, ruby accented black pour, the foam minimal and chocolaty, rising anew with a twist of the fingers on the stem of the glass. The mesmerizing aroma is dark roast enveloped in deep, dark fruit; a rich, heady, woody accent with the essence of bourbon. This brew is so smooth that the flavors are a single experience, rather than a combination that you can peel apart without a thought. The palate is perfection for the body, not leaving you feeling flat, but miles away from buzzy. The last sip is as phenomenal as the first, and I could have, if given enough time (and beer), sipped and inhaled all night. One of the most head-spinning Imperial Stouts I’ve had the pleasure to experience. Extraordinarily sexy, this one...

12 oz bottle from a trade a while back, ’12 vintage. Pitch black pour with a small tan head. Nose has bourbon, chocolate and some soy sauce. Taste is pretty bourbon forwarded, lots of chocolate and vanilla with some light tar notes. Super smooth stuff!

Tasty beer, lots of chocolate and a bit of coffee flavour. Not sure if I could notice the bourbon effect but willing to retry...

Pours a viscous, black color, with a decent mohagony, bubbly head. It leaves back a thick, still bubbly lacing at the edge of the glass. The nose reveals an astonishing balance between molasses, toffee, coconut, prunes and sweet milk chocolate on the one hand, and wooden, accentuating, slightly hot barrel qualities. The barrel is easily noteable on itself, while it hits the spot by supporting the malty aromas as well, in an outstanding, intriguing way. Tastes earthier than the aromas revealed, with toasted, bready malts, accompanied by bakers chocolate and a decent amount of whipped cream. That creamy foundation then gets extended by cane sugar, big time toffee and molasses, which blend very well into the burning, wooden alcohol. Boozy Bourbon gets replaced by big chunks of wood, very chewy, with matured coffee beans, creating a pleasant balance, preventing this successfully from becoming too sweet and boozy. The warmer the beer gets, the more present turns the Bourbon. It provides coconut and a hint of vanilla during the opening, while it becomes quite dominant, as the sweet malt qualities hit the tastebuds. Finishes with ash, scorched malts, slightly dry, while it remains its smooth, chocolate defined mouthfeel.

Bottle. Black with thin mocha head. Basically perfect. Light subtle barrel with maple syrup notes. Rich but smooth. What they all want to be. Love it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Dark cola with reddish tints on the edges and no head. Aroma is oak, vanilla, butter and syrup. Taste adds tons of roasted malt, burnt sugar and toffee. Booze is present but not overwhelming. Mouthfeel is a little thin but not insubstantial. Wonderful.

Bourbon vanilla, coconut, and wood aromas. Sticky sweet aroma. Lighter in body; tastey chocolate roasty character with vanilla, coconut, and wood over-tones. Black in color with tan head. Notes: GABF ’13

Bottle thanks to mashmaster, thank you sir! Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, syrup, faint coffee, awesome! Oh my word. Lots of bitter chocolate, sweet bourbon and espresso flavours make for one heck of a beer.
