Sampled at Fobab 2011. Pours black with a small creamy light tan head. Aroma is biting dark chocolate and roast, woody bourbon character, lots of coffee a bit of a burnt toast sharpness, vanilla and oak. Flavor is nice and rich, lots of dark chocolate, biting roast and coffee note, quite aggressive. Chocolatey and heavy barrell character. Pretty nice stuff

On tap at the Beer Bistro. Joan Jett black pour with a mocha head. Wow, all kinds of bourbon in the nose. Creamy and smooth with lots of mellow bourbon, deep roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, and oak notes. Iíve been chasing this stout for a long time and was not disappointed. Thanks to Dan and Tom for meeting up with me. Itís nice to get to experience these beers with local members of the beer community.

Black with thin tan head. Coconut, vanilla, chocolate, soft notes of dried fruits. Syrupy, sticky, with good carbonation. I can feel the heat in my gums, but alcohol is very well masked. Dried plum, fig, and molasses more prevelant in taste, followed by semi-sweet chocolate. Clean somewhat quick finish for the style. Lasting boozey tingle on my tongue and gums. Excellent, but probably not worth the hype.

Draft... Great looking beer, dark black body, thick dark tan head, about two fingers, nice retention great lace... The nose is fairly subtle and balanced, and you can tell they didnít release this until it was ready, light and very smooth bourbon, brownies, bitter chocolate, light roast... The taste is really smooth as well, but the finish is a bit alcoholic and astringent, the flavor is a touch light, I wish there was a bit sweeter... A really good beer that lives up to the hype

On tap at Bellís. Wow is all I can really say about this. Big, bold, smooth...definitely some bourbon notes and a little alcohol heat in there. But what a great flavor. Nice stuff.

400th Rating!

Sample at Detroit Fall Beer Festival.

A perfect balance of sweet and bitter, stout and bourbon, complex and yet accessible. Fantastic beer. Iím loathe to rate it based off the 3 oz sample, because Iíd really prefer to go off a 12oz sample enjoyed over a whole hour, but suffice to say I could probably drink a lot of this stuff if it was more readily available. Maybe Iíll start mixing DCS and ES and pouring in a shot of whisky just to fake it in the meanwhile...

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2012 Draft. FINALLY, I am able to try this beer! On tap at ABR. Pours a pitch black brown color with a light tan collared head. Dark Chocolate, vanilla, and a touch of earthy leather aroma. Medium/heavy mouthfeel. Roast coffee adds some bitterness, dark chocolate, vanilla, all very well balanced together. Ends with a slight lingering bitterness. I find myself continuing to go back to Bellís tent to try this one and everytime is just as enjoyable as the last. The 10.5% is there but well incorporated and is not abrasive at all.

On tap at The Brick Store, wow. So surprised this wasnít as hyped in ATL as CBS at the Porter last weekend. Poured black with a thick dark brown head. Stuck around. Aroma was big time roast, notes of coffee, sweet cocoa and big bourbon. Dreamy. Flavors were oh so smooth. Like incredibly smooth. Roast and bourbon for days with a thick creamy mouth. Espresso like bitter finish. The creaminess set this apart from other stouts of this caliber. Fantastic stuff.

On tap at the Eccentric Cafe. Served as Black Note. Pour is jet black in my snifter with a thin tan head that fades to a ring. Aroma is chocolatety, with notes of coffee, vanilla, caramel, and a bit of bourbon. Mouthfeel is thick, and viscous. Very dense, and filling. Flavor is also chocolatety, with the same notes of coffee, vanilla, and toffee. Bourbon isnít as pronounced as it usually is in BA stouts. Much more subtle, making this very drinkable. I absolutely loved this. Probably the best bourbon barrel aged stout Iíve ever had!

Draft at Great Taste. I think this may have been the last beer I had and I went out with a bang for sure. As Black Note. Pours pitch black with a deep tan head. Nose is really pretty, all the best parts of both Expy & Double Cream. Floral and vanilla with a deep cocoa notes as well. Strong roast and marshmallows, faint coconut. Really a perfectly barrel aged RIS. on taste, rich and creamy, big notes of vanilla bean and more marshmallow. Strong bitterness and roast keeps it balanced. Pretty great.
