COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The result is a malty harmony of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruit notes, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Bottle from Champanes, this stout had a black-brown pour and made a one finger tan colored head that receded to a cover that had some open areas and a thick ring, this beer was opaque and I could not see through but I saw a mound of bubbles on the top of the beer and some bubbles flowing up the sides of the glass, it left spots and fingers of lacing on the sides of the glass, I saw no sediment in the bottle, this beer had aromas of bourbon, vanilla, bourbon liquor, roasted malt, caramel, some chocolate, malt and bourbon sweetness, it had flavors of roasted malt, bourbon, molasses, bourbon liquor and malt sweetness, there was a little burnt roasted malt notes and there was a touch of coffee flavor in the background, the finish had roasted malt with molasses and a touch of bitterness, the mouth feel was more than medium and had a little creaminess, this beer had more sweetness on the nose than on the mouth, a nice bourbon barreled Imperial stout, not too much bourbon as I find in many Imperial stouts, and not a lot of sweetness like some BB Impys, this was a nice mix of Bourbon Barrel and Imperial Stout.

12oz offering from the sacrificial AndyReynolds (2014 vintage) - nose is chocolate, vanilla, oak and molasses/brown sugar. Sip adds bourbon, coffee grounds and dark chocolate. Bitter of the dark chocolate variety. Numbs muh gums. Still sweet though. Mild to moderate booze factor. A sipper for sure. Well rounded.

"1st off, big thanks to Heybeerman for steppin up and sending me this gem. Split a bottle 3 1/2 ways last night, and will probably revisit when I have a full bottle, by itself, one day soon. My original impression, just from the the aroma was that this was leaning slightly more towards the Double Cream Stout than Expedition, and that turned out to be true in the flavor as well. But both beers are there, giving this a nice rich body, and layers of complexity. The barreling was also a little more prevelant than expected. I really have to nit pick to find anything "wrong" with this beer, but if I had to say something, gimme a tiny bit more expedition and a tiny bit less barrel, and this bad boy may get a perfect 5. Sooooooo smooth and tasty. Held it’s own with a nice batch of Speedway and BA Speedway, two of my favorites."

Strong raisin and prune aroma with mild molasses and nearly hidden cocoa. Apppears clear dark brown, some brown head. Tastes of sweet caramel and raisin up front followed by a somewhat balancing charred toast bitterness. Palate is a bit watery for the style. Overall, good in small doses with a sweet food that will mellow the sweetness of the beer.

Tap. Pitch black. Nice, small lingering brown head. Creamy body. Nose is strong raisin, alcohol. ABV very apparent in taste. Some malty bitterness followed by the stronger tastes of raisin, dark fruits. A biiiiit unbalanced.

2014 bottle. Black. Huge bourbon in the aroma, slight heat, molasses, cocoa. A bit creamy, massive palate, huge bourbon character, nice bitterness. Fantastic.

12 oz bottle - 2014. Pours black with a small foamy brown head. Aroma was different and not what I was expecting or used to with this style. I got raisin, plum, caramel, wood, light bourbon, and sweet malt. Taste is some chocolate, a bit of bourbon, woody, and sweet malts. Full body, some bitter mixed in, and a bit dry to finish. Solid stout.

Bottle. 12 oz. 2014 Vintage. Pours deep black with an amber head and smooth, tightly-bubbled head. Aroma is heavy on the licorice, molasses, dried figs, cocoa, dark cherries, oak and bourbon. Taste is smooth; bitter coffee, cocoa, Hershey syrup, and espresso. The bitterness in the finish is phenomenal. Beautiful, rich, bitter and creamy. Excellent beer.

Pours opaque and dark brown. Hardly any head. Aroma is rich and oaky, hints of vanilla. The bourbon barrel is definitely in evidence here. Lovely velvety texture. Long, ashy, malty finish with a bit of burn. Excellent.

Very dark reddish brown with oily film. The smell is glorious, full of oak, bourbon, molasses, fruitcake. The taste rolls through the mouth from dark to molasses to bright to bourbon and an aftertaste of coffee. This is extremely excellent.

smells like soy sauce. light bourbon, vanilla, and savory meaty smoky soy sauce. blech. Taste is roasty, rich, dry, oak, chocolate, light bourbon and some soy sauce notes. Rich body. creamy. Not my favorite. Reminds me of expedition but with some light bourbon. Nothing special.
