tectactoe (1507) - Michigan, USA - JUL 27, 2014
Tap: Black body with a mocha head; fine-bubbled & quick to reduce to a collar. Aroma of whiskey coated, sweet dates & prunes in a dark chocolate bath. Some cream, licorice, & heavier wood towards the back-end. Definitely a boozy beer, lots of barrel up-front on the palate with balancing notes of semisweet chocolate. Dark prunes, anise, mild vanilla, some sweet berry, & a bit of tannic wood in the finish. Itís not as well refined as some other barrel aged beers, but I enjoyed this nonetheless.

On tap at MBGSF 2014. Pours black with a light tan head. Molasses and soy aromas. Flavors of roast cocoa and coffee, raisin, molasses, and some bourbon note. Very good, but not quite as good as the regular version.

Pailhead (4633) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - JUL 26, 2014
On tap: The aroma consists of chocolate, molasses, light oak, and a touch of vanilla. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a small tan head. The flavor starts with dark chocolate with a touch of molasses. The finish has light-moderate oak with some light roast and vanilla. Itís medium-full bodied with mild carbonation.

Tmoney99 (10459) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUL 9, 2014
Tap sample. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted chocolate malt and sweet woody bourbon aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted malt and bourbon flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Standout brew that exceeded my expectations.

JDBaker11058 (1220) - Maryland, USA - JUN 26, 2014
Appearance: black, with a nice creamy mocha head; hint of residual lacing. Aroma: dark roasted malts, and definite notes of black licorice, oak, bourbon, chocolate pudding. Taste: espresso, dark chocolate, light note of unsweet black licorice, vanilla, cream, light pine, wet wood and whiskey. Finish: lingering roasty dark malts, vanilla, and booze. Notes: 4 oz draft at NoVA Brewfest 2014. Absolutely glorious. Maybe I got the best of the batch? It was great.

Snifter at Bellís on 5/18/14. Very excited for this one, as Kalamazoo is one of my absolute favorite straight up stouts. That excitement quickly led to disappointment. Black pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of bourbon, licorice, a big apple and vinous fruit character (acetaldehyde) and chocolate. Flavor is overwhelmingly acetaldehyde with some noticeable bourbon, chocolate and roast on the aftertaste. Surprising a brewery that I consider to be one of the absolute best in quality would serve such an obviously flawed offering to the public.

Tap. Nice dark pour with a clingy beige head. Nose is a bit plasticy. Wood and vanilla come out in the taste. Not bad, but not an upgrade from the original.

On tap at the Eccentric Café. The pour is a mild black with some ruby notes around the edges and a bit of the body is transparent. The aroma is... Something else. Earthy woods and booze. You have to fight to get some stout characters and they're light. Roast and cocoa mostly. The flavor. Whoa boy. I think they dropped a slat of barrel into my glass, and I'm chewing on it. The booze is just dominating. The woody presence is just out there. The mouth feel is thin and light with no carbonation to help out. The aftertaste is just woody and boozy. Not a fan. Further proof that any beer does NOT get better with barrel aging. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
