Tallahassee, Fl - on tap at Proof Brewing Company. Dark black pour, thin but persistent off-white head. Aroma of cotton candy, patented chocolate/coffee imperial stout aroma - yes - it has developed its own aroma after all these years unique unto itself. Flavor presents some dark unsweetened bittersweet chocolate, some espresso, hints of black licorice, a touch of fine cognac and some trailing notes of Fruity Pebbles cereal that is a tad disconcerting. Silky smooth thick mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a medium sized creamy beige head. The aroma had big dark fruits, figs, raisin, caramel, bourbon and vanilla. The flavor has the bourbon and vanilla melding nicely with the big raisin, fig, dark fruits from the base beer. Some chocolate and roast show as well. I like the base, but this is better.

Bells Bourbon Barrel Ale wasn’t high on my list. It is 14.8% alcohol and it shows. The taste reminded me a lot like a fortified wine. It wasn’t something I would ever considering trying again. It has a strong smell of spirits and it tasted extremely strong. Personally, I didn’t enjoy it but that is because I am not a fan of Bourbon.

Aroma: chocolate, coffee, dark roasted malts, brown sugar, pleasant hints of bourbon, some sweetness, nice and rich. Appearance: jet black pour, opaque. Taste: rich chocolate and fudge, coffee and dark malts, some dark sugars and fruit, bourbon and hints of oak, alcohol is warming but not distracting - actually the booze has mellowed compared to the regular batch 9000. Palate: full body, fairly chewy and silky, low-medium carbonation. Overall: excellent beer - definitely more refined than the base.

On tap at Sam’s, Durham, at a recent Bell’s tap takeover. Blow me down, good to try this one. But damn this shit was ass-rapingly strong. The 11% brew I was trading off with a buddy seemed like the weak beer comparatively. In any case, I actually enjoyed this a bit more than the regular 9000. Whereas I found the base beer to be sort of mindlessly harsh, I thought the barrels improved this one considerably. Dark fruits, rich chocolate, vanilla and booze, and potent as all get-out.

C&C 750 Bottle – generously shared by Dr. Chad at Crooked Stave….thanks amigo! Poured a deep coffee color with a small tan head and lacing. Nose is aromatic with bourbon, vanilla, roasted malts and dark chocolates floating around. Full bodied flavor that is somewhat sweet and oaky. Lightly carbed with loads of bourbon, vanilla and dark fruits working throughout and on the finish. Very tasty stuff. Get some….

Tap at WOB. Pours a deep black with a thick mocha head. Huge bourbon nose with notes of chocolate. Taste is big chocolate, anise, wood and bourbon. Complex stout that hides the alcohol well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap; best beer I’ve had in a while. Poured a somewhat flat jet black with a small brown head. Aroma was fantastic; cookies, bourbon, wood, fruit, caramel and vanilla. Boozy but in a good way. Flavor was thick and tasty. One to sip and enjoy. Same flavor profile with maybe a bit more of a roasted presence.
