gbdub (73), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA Apr 23, 2008 Updated: Apr 28, 2008Aroma is sweet, roasted and malty, with dried fruits and definitely a tart cherry scent. Rounded, viscous mouthfeel. Tart cherry up front, sour and sweet, shifting to a dark roasted coffee flavor. Not bad, and better than a lot of fruit beers, but could definitely use some more bitterness to balance things out, and less of the tartness. As it is, the cherry and the stout don’t blend quite harmoniously. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Apr 19, 2008 bottle. pours a pitch black with a 1/4" tan head... looks wonderful. however the overall taste is very tart and a bit sour.... not really to my liking. However, it is not bad, just not really my thing. some aromas of sweet cherries.... the palate is consumed with these cherries as the name would indicate, but it consumes too much of the beer’s character. In the great picture, this is not a bad beer... but I would not buy again... too many other excellent offerings from Bells. gueuzeisgod (109), Graham, North Carolina, USA Apr 19, 2008 A little bit of cold coffee grounds on the nose, apricot, faint cherry, no hop aroma. A mouthfeel that is unpleasantly astringent, not really sour but a bit tart and drying. The flavors don’t blend well in this beer, two different things with no common ground in the middle. Not so great, but I still like Bell’s brewery. Jvittorio4187 (255), Boardman, Ohio, USA Apr 18, 2008 Wow, I thought I rated this. Pours a deep black with a thin with head. Aroma of chocolate, toffee, and cherries. Taste is VERY tart. Cherries overwhelm the palate. Finish is very tart, then sour, and fades to faint chocolate. ante (2904), Stockholm, Sweden Apr 18, 2008 Bottled at Akkurat, Stockholm. Pours out in a opaque black colour with a small pale brown head. Rich, full and fat aroma of toasted malts, cocoa, butter, black coffee, cream, crackers and tart cherries. Nearly full-bodied with notes of chocolate cake, nuts, coffee and cherry-skins. Long, full, smooth and lasting finish of tart cherries and black cherries. Really tasty, I just love the stouts from Bells. CanIHave4Beers (838), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Apr 16, 2008 Very dark stout with a slightly nutty roasted aroma. The head is almost non existant. I can’t say this is a bad beer, it is quite enjoyable in fact, I suppose it is not really what I expected. The cherry flavor is very subdued, which is a good thing but perhaps some more of their sourness would have been welcomed here... at least in my opinion. I think I was let down because it reminded me very much of one of my least favorite home brew experiences. If you’re looking for a good stout with some interesting fruit flavor, then this is a good enough beer, but it is nothing overwhelmingly fantasitc. Perhaps I should cellar some as the suggestion states. bdigital (585), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA Apr 14, 2008 Bottle, batch 7734: I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to rate this one but on to it...pours a pitch black color with a minimal tan head. Wonderful chocolate-covered cherry aroma with some dark malts lingering. Tart, dry mouth feel...the cherry was a bit too sour/tart for my tastes but this was still very good. Other notes of chocolate and roasted malts noted as well. Pastor (509), Maine, USA Apr 11, 2008 Thanks to goryshkewych for the opportunity to try this one
Bottle from batch #8339 poured into my tulip glass produced a fingers worth of tan head that turned into a ring of lace around the glass .the body was jet black in color
Aromas of cherries and chocolate along with roasted malts fill your head
Flavors of sour cherries dark chocolate and coffee
Mouthfeel is not as thick as I like for a stout
Drinkability is a hard one on this, it’s an interesting combination of flavors not one I would have thought went well together but it worked for me. I sipped my way through the glass and enjoyed it .I wouldn’t want one every night but once an a while would work I would label it a must try at least one to pass judgment on yourself
