jcweaver (65), VA Beach, Virginia, USA Apr 11, 2008 Poured dark, smelled faintly of cherries and coffee. Had a bitter almost medicinal aftertaste. I like cherries; I like stouts; I did not like this combination very well. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Apr 8, 2008 12 oz bottle courtesy of Linus stick. Pours an opaque black color with a medium tan head that faded slowly. The Aroma was a mixture of molasses and cherries with the molasses dominating. The flavor was more cherry forward, but the molasses was still clearly present. The mouthfeel was full and malty. The finish was long and a bit tart. Overall: I had no idea what to expect with this one, but it turns out that I rather like it--a nice session stout that goes down easy. And hey, if the lambic people can add fruit flavorings to their stuff why not the stouties. Recommended. And thanks again Linus--I owe you. blklab2007 (938), Connecticut, USA Apr 1, 2008 Updated: Jul 17, 2009bottle poured a dark black in color with a textbook thick dark tan head that retained a heavy ring inside the glass. aroma has some sour cherry, coffee, malt, and molasses. first taste while cold it was two sided with one being a dark coffee stout and the other a sour cherry fruit. much better balance when warmed being more of a sweet stout. has dark stout characters with chocolate and coffee and a bite from the sour cherry. very interesting combination seeing both sides of the flavor are equally predominant. unique and one i am glad i got the chance to try. wj94 (64), Virginia, USA Mar 31, 2008 I don’t know if I got a bad bottle or what, but this was a complete drainpour after the first two sips. Nose is a roasty stout, but the finish was so cough syrup-like that I couldn’t stomach it. Blech! gunsho (134), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Mar 30, 2008 i love sweet stouts. they give you that big body with a more complex flavor. and theyre fun to pair with food. this one pours black and along with its roasted maltyed body this one starts cherry and finishes cherry. interesting beer. no de dolle. gearbike (413), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA Mar 30, 2008 Delecious. But do not be fooled this is not a thick filling stout. It is sweet but very tart. The cherries do not really stand out. GlenVargas (120), El Paso, Texas, USA Mar 29, 2008 Bell’s Cherry Stout (bottle from RFD in D.C.!) is probably one of the most interesting stouts I’ve tasted. Either I was just seeing things or there was actually a ruddy hue to the head. The beer was dark brown-black, but not necessarily opaque, and the smell was about what you’d expect from a cherry stout (cherry and malt/coffee). The taste was immediately tart, but still maintained the usual roastiness of a stout. The body was a little thin, and, with the carbonation, I couldn’t help but think of cherry coke. Still, the originality of this brew makes up for what it lacks. The Cherry Stout is generally well-balanced and highly drinkable. WickerBrew (312), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 24, 2008 Interesting beer indeed, smells great and looks incredible. I expected to be wholloped by cherries, which wasnt the case - thank god. It actually mixes pretty well, but I dont know if I could take down more than a couple of these at once. Best comparison I can make is Surly Two, and this is not nearly as tart. This doesnt have as much fruit taste, which might be a good or a bad thing depending what you are going for.
