Tripplebrew (486), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Jan 12, 2008 Pours a dark chocolate brown. A very little tan lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and cherries. Flavor is a bit tart and sweet with undertones of cherries and coffee. Expected a thicker body but it was pretty light. joekfsu (138), Boardman, Ohio, USA Jan 11, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours black with nearly no head, whats there is tan. Aroma of coffee, cherries and alcohol. Initial flavor is sweet cherries, followed by tartness that continues long after the beer is off the palate. Cherry throughout, no other flavors really show up. Light to medium body, no carbonation, no lacing. Not very drinkable and wouldn’t get it again. Luckily there are more Bells selections in my fridge tonight. jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Jan 7, 2008 Bottle courtesy of ketchepillar - pre batch 8000, not sure of the #. Thanks Sam. Aroma is mildly dry with a touch of espresso and a backside of faint cherry. Flavor is chocolate up front with a lingering dry bitter coffee fighting to shine in front of a superficial cherry tone. Bit soda like in the cherry character and a thin to medium mouthfeel. This seems a bit confused. It’s interesting, but I don’t think it really works well for me. ketchepillar (475), Viña del Mar, Chile Jan 5, 2008 Updated: May 7, 20091/5/08-7734. No head at all. Cherry is well balanced in the aroma, more dark malt coming through than in the palate. Not overly sweet aroma. Cherry is too sticky sweet in the taste. A fair amount of bitterness is present too, but it doesn’t cancel out the sweetness, rather just makes for an unpleasantly intense taste, going in two different directions. Finishes fairly tart. 7/3/5/3/12-3.0
5/7/2009-7734. So I’ve been dreading opening this bottle for 16 months now after the last one, but was pleasantly surprised. Still no head. It has mellowed out considerably. Aroma is of some kind of spice bread and some cherry candy. Can’t pinpoint it, but it’s very familiar. Sweetness is manageable now, with a bit of chocolate and roast backing it up, especially in the finish. Palate is pretty good. Nice low carbonation makes for a very smooth finish. 7/4/8/4/15-3.8 railcat1 (578), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 4, 2008 This is dark sweet and not bad .I was a little overwhelmed by the cheery finish and tartness to it but i like my stouts and had to give it a try.CHEERS! Arayaga2 (933), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 4, 2008 Headless opaque brown, like a cup of soy sauce. Pruney aroma with a hint of tart cherry warms to something more roasty and stoutlike.Taste is thin and roasty with tart vinous notes and chocolatey coffee finish. $2.40/12oz Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 2, 2008 Fresh 2007 vintage, Batch 8219. The body is about as black as it gets. I can’t even pick up any traces of mahogany. A small, foamy tan head settles quickly to a thin film with a thick edge. Random spots and flares of lacing decorate the glass well. The aroma displays big roasted chocolate malts, subtle sour cherries, and a good amount of roasted coffee bitterness. The flavor is a bit of a muddled mess. Its not unpleasant, but the malts and the cherries seem to just trip over one another. The coffee component also seems a bit out of place, as I can’t think of more incongruous flavors as coffee and sour cherries. Still, it all works together somewhat decently. The mouthfeel is on the heavy side of medium, very smooth and silky. Finishes long, with that same strange mix of sour cherries, dark malts and coffee. This is a pretty good brew, but nowhere near Bells’ capability. This is a rare letdown from an awesome brewery. Hey, if your letdown beers are a 3.5, I guess you are doing something right. jhulett (2), Farmington Hills, Michigan, USA does not count Dec 31, 2007 Wonderfully black in color. Medium thickness with almost no head. The aroma has defintie sour cherry, but is dominated by roasted malt. The flavor is a tart cherry with bitter malt. Very nice, smooth mouth feel. As with other Bell’s beers, the flavor varies slightly from batch to batch. This is one of my favorites that I look forward to every September.
