JamesD (192), Centreville, Virginia, USA Oct 29, 2007 A very interesting beer. The aroma is mild and kind of chocolatey. The flavor is sweet, chocolatey, with a slight cherry flavor. It tastes kind of like cherry cordials and would be a good complement to them. If I see this again, I plan on buying some. clasley (153), Arkansas, USA Oct 28, 2007 355 ml bottle. Pours a dense reddish black with a copious burgundy head. Rich chocolate nose with notes of cherry. Medium body. Initial sweetness is quickly offset with an edgy cherry tartness. Nice semi-dry finish with lingering cherry tones. BeerBelcher (930), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 27, 2007 This beer poured a slightly viscous black, with a very small amount of dark-tan head. Aroma is roasty with just a touch of fruit...which to my nose smells of cherries or perhaps grapes. Flavor is more of sour cherries than it is of stout. If I tasted this with my eyes clothes, I would’ve imagined this beer would be pink or red rather than the inky black that it is. Flavor is dissapointingly not roasted, but is still pretty good. If this were a fruit beer I wouldn’t really be disappointed by the taste...but for a beer that is advertised as a stout, I feel a bit let down. Mouthfeel is tart and puckery up front, but sort of slick and sticky as it sits in your mouth. Not bad.
I’d weakly recommend this beer. Bells has a sterling reputation in the craft beer scene, but I’m guessing it is not because of this beer. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Oct 24, 2007 Bottle. Pitch black stout with a dark head. Super sweet nose. Initially it tastes like many other stouts, but the aftertaste is extremely tart. The more I have, the more it tastes like a good dark beer was ruined by mixing with children’s cough syrup. It gets pretty tough to get down by the end. This isn’t my style of beer. tmongoose (39), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Oct 24, 2007 anticipated this one. i am still waiting for a bad bells product and to date havent found one. this beer pours thicker than the taste. dark color with nice head that disappears gradually. for me not alot of cherry flavor but its a good mix with the alcohol content. the after taste is what gives me the cherry flavor. this beer would be good at just below room temp on a cold winter day. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 23, 2007 Updated: Oct 24, 200712 oz. Opaque black with a medium sized head. Earthy and fruity red wine aroma. Flavor is woody smoke, tart fruit, sour cream and slight alcohol. Medium bodied and mostly smooth. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Oct 23, 2007 Bottle; according to Bells website, this one is almost 2 years old. Pours black with a thin creamy reddish-brown head that diminishes to a ring around the edge of the glass. The aroma is a nice dark roasted malt with a solid black cherry backing and a light coffee note as well. Pretty nice; it reminds me of the black cherry chocolate sauce I picked up in Chicago a couple years ago. Medium to full-bodied and quite slick with a tart and sour bitter -oasted finish. The flavor is a major drop-off from the nose, making me think this bottle may be past its prime. Big tart cherry front the flavor profile transitioning into the roasted malts that matched well in the aroma but just don’t work at all for me in the flavor. Fairly sour and astringent, this is not what I was hoping for in this beer. It’ll probably be quite a while before I’m compelled to drop $13 to see if this bottle was past its prime or if this odd combination of flavors was what Bells intended. dkachur (2316), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Oct 22, 2007 Bottle. Part 3 of 4 of my Bell’s stout-fest, and my least favorite so far. Pours black with, obviously, a cherry aroma. The taste is very sour cherry at the start that devolves into a very mediocre porter. Hard to drink, as the taste at the end of the bottle was more barbecue sauce than anything,
