Abel (13), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 9, 2007 Poured a dark brown w/light head. Malty aroma and smells like cherries too. Very thin body. Sour and sweet chery flavor, but thats about it. Bell’s other stouts are all much better in my opinion. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Apr 8, 2007 Cherry aroma, of course, with a slight sourness, malt. Dark reddish brown with minimal head. Tart cherry flavor with roasted malt background. Not as complex as I expected. Sweet up front and evolves into a bitter finish. Much thinner in character than the Java Stout, Kalamazoo, or Expedition. More like a very dark cherry juice with a chocolaty finish. Somewhat flat. GreenDragon (213), Richmond, Virginia, USA Apr 7, 2007 Pours a deep dark brown with a medium tan head. The head looks creamy and frothy. Lovely roasted malt aroma with a hint of tartness. Sweet flavor with alternating notes of a lovely cherry tartness and roasted malts. The cherry taste lingers on longer. Thick creamy body with no alcohol burn. Very smooth and leaves an excellent tart cherry taste behind. A truly marvelous beer! DirtyMartini (194), Los Angeles, Alabama, USA Apr 3, 2007 i dont feel the need to get to in depth with this rating. its a solid stout, that as it warms, you get a certain cherry juiciness in the aftertaste. its definitely not upfront, its something you have to look for. decent brew, but not something i would go out of my way for. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA Mar 29, 2007 Updated: Apr 6, 2007Totally opaque dark brown with hints at oranges and reds. A dark tan head is trademark Bell’s, thick creamy and well retained. Lacing is thinly spread about and mostly arc shaped. Roasted malts and coffee are noted first in the aroma, followed by touches of cherry sweetness, chocolate, slight alcohol and treacle. Simple cream essences conclude a brief nosing. Awkward and very highly tart and acidic cherry juice is the first flavor characteristic. Lighter roasted flavor than expected or previously experienced in a stout from this brewer. Sourness encompasses chocolate and mild caramel flavors, all the maltiness really. Finishes with notes of chocolate covered cherries and moderate bitterness, teeth gnashing tartness too. Palate is full bodied, warming, half as sticky as expected and oily/syrupy. The most important part of the experience, flavor, is the least impressive of the components of the sample. Nonetheless this is a decent stout. I bet this ages tremendously well. Bing! alexsdad06 (1056), Ohio, USA Mar 28, 2007 Bottle. Pours very dark/black with smallish head. The cherries are definetly present in the aroma along with malt and some chocolate. Flavors include sour cherries, roasted malt, and chocolate. The cherries do not get in the way of the rest of the flavors. I have not tried aging these but will start right away. benfergy (46), Valley City, North Dakota, USA Mar 28, 2007 The appearance is solid black, not as thick as Guinness. Even without intentionally taking a scent, I can sense the aroma, which is indeed cherry and stout. The cherry taste is not overpowering at all, and the stout taste comes through. There’s some nut flavor as well. The palate is nothing special, but who cares, this is a great beer and one I’ll definitely want to drink again. DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA Mar 27, 2007 Pours black with virtually no head.Aroma is sour cherries and coffee.Flavor follows the aroma with the coffee showing up more on the back end.the finish was sour
