COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This unique ale begins its life as a powerful and richly sweet stout to which Michigan tart cherries are added. The resulting black brew is complex, sweet and tart with a distinct cherry finish. It will improve with cellaring. Available September - May

UPDATED: NOV 6, 2013 Bottle: completely black, opaque body with a deep tan head that is slow to form & slow to fall. Aroma is mostly sweet cherry juice with a mild undercurrent of milk chocolate, faint coffee, & light, finishing roast. I think the cherries distract from some of the robustness of the stout. Taste is a quick hit of roasted malt followed immediately by tart cherry juice... not quite sour or puckering, but exceedingly tart for a stout. Slight acidity in the finish with a touch of medicinal notes in the aftertaste. Sweet cherry finish with only a faint hint of dark cocoa & roasty malt. The sharp acidity & slight medicinal flavors can be a little distracting at times... It does get better with warmth, however, as the medicinal flavors fade & the authentic cherry tartness integrates into the stout more effectively.

12oz bottle. Pours black, brown soapy head, no lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, maybe some cherry. Flavor is instantly tart, and then smoky malt. The cherry isnít syrupy or in your face... for better or worse. Simultaneously dry and sweet. A pretty good beer, but does not come together nearly as well as Walking Man Stout, from Waahington.

Bottle. Minimal light brown head. Fruity nose with notes of cherry and plum. Very dark- dark brown purple. Sharp fruit beginning with a dry finish. Complex and delicious.

Aroma of cocoa and cherries. Big head that doesnít last long. Flavor is big roast followed by tart cherries. Not as rich or sweet as the brewer describes. Mine was bottled in late 2013, so a little aged, which is of course fine for stouts. I never have the patience for cellaring, but I could imagine this getting better with time. At any rate, good beer. I would have liked the stout and cherry elements to blend in a little more balanced fashion, but still certainly drinkable. Iím actually surprised there arenít more attempts at cherry stouts given the popularity of chocolate cherries.

Shared bottle. Pours dark black with light tan head. Very inviting aroma of dark roast and tart cherries. Enjoyed the aroma more than the taste. The tart cherries give an astrigency to the beer I did not expect. I almost wonder if this beer would be better as a porter with more sweetness and body. Would not be able to drink more than one bottle in a sitting but might try again.

Pours black with a large fading head. Nose shows chocolate, roasted malt and chocolate fudge. Flavours include more chocolate and roast but thereís also an acidity from the cherry along with authentic cherry flavours. Could use more roast. Carbonation feels a bit too lively.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a mason jar. It was bottled on 11/7/13 and cost $4.19 ($0.35 per ounce).

Appearance: Ink black hue with virtually no highlights whatsoever. Initially pours to a fairly large, brown, soapy head, but it dissipates almost completely and leaves no lacing.

Smell: Standard sweet stout aroma of dark roasted malt. Only a hint of cherry in the nose.

Taste: When fruit is used in a beer it tends to be the center of attention, but in the case of Bellís Cherry Stout, itís the other way around. This is a solid stout base that uses cherries for their tartness rather than any kind of sweet or juicy flavor. The result is an interesting twist on a familiar style and it works in that respect.

The palette starts off as a typical sweet stout with a general taste of dark malt. Thereís a slight cola-like flavor in the first half of the swig with a light tart sensation as well. Once it hits the apogee, the tartness takes over completely for a moment and adds a sweet taste of authentic cherry (no cough medicine flavor here). Some dark chocolate and a hint of coffee on the backend as well, imparting mild bitterness and dryness. It all fades away rather quickly, though, which is unfortunate because itís quite pleasing while in the mouth. Perhaps a fresher bottle would be more robust and complex, but thereís no obvious flaws in this vintage.

Drinkability: Considering the type of beer this is and the fact itís 7% ABV, you might be inclined to think Bellís Cherry Stout is a rich, thick dessert brew, but thatís not the case. The mouthfeel is a little thin and tepid, and extremely smooth going down. The tartness is prominent, but still contained, so anyone should be able to handle it no problem. Itís not necessarily a dessert beer, but more of a unique treat.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into small Tulip glass. Deep chocolate brown in color with a dark tan head that dissipates as it sits. Scents of tart cherries and unsweetened chocolate. Semi dry on the palate with notes of roasted coffee, roasted grains, dark chocolate, finished by a tart cherry bite. Pretty complex overall. Good beer but beware of the tart, tangy finish.

Bottle, pours a dark brown with a small tan head, tangy taste of chocolate and cherry, a little bit different than I am used to with stouts but a good change of pace, I would have this again.

Bottle, shared with Parksy. Hearty superdark brown with a tan head. Bitter chocolate and hard roast end on a tart acidic fruity finish. Excellent.
