COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This unique ale begins its life as a powerful and richly sweet stout to which Michigan tart cherries are added. The resulting black brew is complex, sweet and tart with a distinct cherry finish. It will improve with cellaring. Available September - May

12 oz bottle. Black with a thin brown head. Nose is medium coffee and tart cherry with some roasty malt notes and wisps of smoke. Sweetly tart cherry laid over a roasty malt flavor and bitter chocolate. Medium body. Nice.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2010 1 year old bottle. Pours jet black with big creamy tan head. Mostly lasting, some lacing. Aroma is cherries, coffee and chocolate. Flavor starts out with tart cherries, then the sweet malt and chocolate comes through. Flavor has mellowed and blended quite well with age. Texture is smooth and very creamy. Long finish.

POured a black color with a tan head. Aroma is of sour cherries and some nice coffee aroma. Flkavor is of a lot of sour cherries, but with a weird acidic flavor which takes away from the nice stout roasted smoothness.

Bottle. Pours quite black with some reddish brown at the edges and a very thin brown head. The aroma is very roasty, with some coffee, charcoal, wood, and a faint vinous note. The flavor is also roasty at first, but a dry sour cherry flavor comes in quickly. There are also some ashy notes in there, and a tart finish. The alcohol is only apparent in the aftertaste. The more I drink of it, the more I can taste the cherries, especially on my lips. Some hints of espresso come out, too, as it gets close to room temperature. Not bad.

Strong cherry taste but definitely a strong burnt caramel aroma that for me is not so great.

Nice deep dark black color and no head whatsoever. Heavy aromas of smoke and coffee. Dry and smokey, cherry and coffee flavors with a nice smooth vanilla like creaminess at the end. Thanks to Dhrjericho for this bitchin’ brew.

Bottle, pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of cherries and some chocolate. Incredibly tart from the cherries. The actual stout itself is actually a little thin, but I do like the tart cherries. Enjoyable.

12 oz bottle

I picked up a bottle of this in Kalamazoo after not finding anything interesting on tap (and Dark Horse just down the road). The bottle was from batch 8144. It is more stout than cherry but the two play nicely against each other. Bell’s has a nice offering on their hands here that you should try if you run across it.

Aroma / Appearance - The black body was close in appearance to that of Expedition Stout including the lacing. A suede head roughly a half-finger in height sat on top. Black cherries, expresso and dark chocolate reminded me of a mixture of Belgian Red and a Top 50 Imperial Stout. For some reason the smell of black olives was strong after a while.

Flavor / Palate - The first sip filled my mouth with supreme pizza (specifically black olives and pepperoni). Smoke, licorice and burnt malts sweep across the throat on the second taste. Finally cherries complete the experience as they come out towards the end of the glass. The combination is more stout than fruit beer and totally different than New Glarus’ take on a cherry stout. If I were ever to slow down exploring new beers I wouldn’t mind giving this a try again.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2006 12 oz. bottle. Black body with a very minimal brown head. Aroma is cherries with some toasty malts. Flavor begins with sour cherries, moves on to toasted malts with chocolate and a bit of coffee, and finishes with sweet cherries, almost too cloying, like cough syrup. Palate is oily and smooth. A very interesting beer - good, but not great.
