COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The basic inspiration for Bell’s Christmas Ale was to create a sessionable holiday beer, using locally grown malt, which would stand apart from the array of spiced winter warmers that are typically introduced this time of year. In contrast to many other seasonals, Christmas Ale doesn’t contain any spices: all of the dry, toasted notes & subtle toffee flavors come from the 100% Michigan-grown barley, custom malted by Briess Malting, while a blend of hops from Michigan & the Pacific Northwest lend earthy, herbal aromas. At 5.5% ABV, it stands as a smooth, highly drinkable beer intended to complement holiday menus, not overshadow them.

It pours light brown with a pale tan head. I smell bread and malt. The taste is big on malt and spice, but very light on hops. This is a bit watery compared to other Christmas/Winter ales. The spices do provide a bit of a bite. Not a bad Ale.. Just not great either.

Pours a nice copper from a bottle. Very good sweet toffee maltiness with a slight bitter end on the tongue.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), moderately hoppy (orange, apricot, grapefruit), with a note of metal. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic, metallic. What the heck does this have to do with xmas? Bupkis, as far as I can tell. Thin, watery, and metallic mouthfeel leaves an awful lot to be desired in that department, and the nose is basically a pale ale sorta thing with a tinny note there as well. Rather sourish too. Ugh. Poor by any measure.

Sample. Light copper color with white head. Malty aroma. Likewise taste, really isn’t anything special.

Red in color. Sweet malty flavor with light hop flavor. Similar to an irish red in some senses.

Tap at Gingerman. Quite boring for Christmas. Light copper pour nose is toffee. Tastes of toffee, faint malt, grains, light earth. Semi sweet palate kinda flat. Overall dull but not offensive.

12 oz Bottle. Appearance is hazy copper color with medium, beige head. Aroma is toasted grains, caramel, and some pine. Taste is malty sweetness, toast, slight nuttiness, and a very mild pine bitterness. Palate medium-bodied with a smooth, soft finish.
