4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a dark amber with a slightly beige head. The head is rather thin, but a fair amount of lacing remains for the duration. Aroma is of caramel malts and toffee, rather sweet and distinctive. Upon first taste I was immediately hit by a strong alcohol flavor akin to bourbon, as well as a buttery toffee taste. As it settled down, the maltiness in the aroma reasserted itself. But hereís where it gets interesting: As the beer continued to warm, I also detected a hint of wood smoke and salt in the flavor--just a touch. This is a doppelbock to be sure, but for me, there was just a hint of a rauchbier profile. In the end, I have to say that the taste really was sweet and salty. Mouthfeel was watery, but the carbonation was stronger and sharper than usual for this style. In sum: A beer that holds itís own with the best German variants of the style. Definitely worthy a try.

Bottle. Poured clear amber -- very attractive color. Aroma is mild but nice. Flavor is smooth but a little bland all-around. Leaves you a dry, sour aftertaste. Not bad and very drinkable, but missing something...
Had it with some spicy hummus -- balanced well!!!

The beer pours a clear brownish red with a medium off-white head, and the aroma blends roasted malts, caramel, lager yeast, slight hints of coffee, and slight hints of toffee. The taste is quite umami, slightly sweet, and a touch sour, and the aftertaste is malty, hearty, and slightly sweet without overpowering the tongue. The palate has a soft carbonation, thick texture, and a medium body.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Poured into a snifter. Dark mahogany brown with beige head that quickly dissipates. Light malt aroma (kind of underwhelming). Taste is malty with big dark/dried fruit bouquet: prune, black mission fig, currant and plum. Slightly boozy on the palate as well. Oily mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Fairly toasted sweet finish.

Iím not sure what happened with Bellís Consecrator Doppelbock Beer. This is a brewery that usually makes great stuff across all styles, but for some reason this beer just seems off to me. Itís not especially delectable or aromatic, though it is no challenge to drink. What shouldíve been something great is only okay at best.
I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. It was bottled on 1/24/15 and cost $4.19 ($0.35 per ounce).
Appearance: Beautiful burgundy hue, fairly clear. Pours to a two-finger, tan, soapy which mostly dissipates and leaves minor lacing.
Smell: Rather strong alcohol aroma, hint of fruit and some earthy hop character.
Taste: Thereís a certain maltiness found in doppelbocks, and I was hoping to get that here. And while this beer is certainly more malty than hoppy, itís lacking in distinctive character. Instead of caramel, toffee, etc., I only get mild dark fruit and a lot of alcohol. Thereís also a surprisingly strong hop presence as well. Slightly earthy and dry, perhaps with a touch of spice. There seems to be some kind of vegetal presence, though faint. A dash of vanilla from the booze, but otherwise I find the palette to be on the mild side.
Drinkability: One thing Bellís Consecrator Doppelbock Beer has going for it is its delivery. The mouthfeel is nice and thick with a smooth texture. The 8% ABV makes itself known in the form of warmth (and a bit in the taste), though I would not describe it as a hot brew at all. Iíd expect more complexity and intensity for the body, but whatís here is quite drinker-friendly.

Lager smell, slightly toasty, some hazelnut, smells like an Oktoberfest. Looks great. Crisp on the palate with a roasted coffee aftertaste.

Bought a single bottle at the store. Have only sampled German Dopplebockís in the past. Poured into a pint glass. Sniff is very mild, had to try several times to get the aroma. Once I did this beer has a lovely butterscotch scent. Wish it was a bit stronger but amazing none the less. When first poured the appearance is very nice. Head is silky and a pleasant amber color of the body. Unfortunately the head fades quickly and leaves ok coating on glass. This is where the beer impresses most, the flavor. Much better than the German doppelbocks I have tried, possibly because I live in same state as Bellís brewery and German bottles sitting too long on shelf. The taste is very good balance of sweet and malty. A smooth butterscotch flavor without overpowering sweetness.
The body is about medium and has average carbonation. This beer is quite smooth for abv and perfect for fall or winter. Bellís has a consistent lineup. Now to try this with a paczki!

Very special beer. Love the label. Very smooth and complex. I thought the overall taste and palate were extremely delightful.
