j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA May 5, 2009 Rating 400. Bottle from daknole. Thanks man. Batch number 8311, packaged February 7, 2008, so it’s got a little bit of age on it. Pours a deep dark black with a thin dark tan head that falls away rather quickly. Beautiful. Plums and prunes, chocolate, roast, thick black malt, molasses, and a hint of leather. Thick, but still light. Amazingly nice body. Starts a tad sweet, but nothing cloying or syrupy. Ample chocolate, roast, and a touch of bitter coffee. Finishes up with a slow smooth smoky roast bitterness. The abv is hidden pretty well on here, but this is still a very slow sipping beer. I have an even older one of these from BFC, and am very much looking forward to that one now.
josephselander (42), Salem, Oregon, USA May 4, 2009 Appearance - Black, very black. Pours pretty thick, but not too thick. Does coat the glass a little leaving a slight film. Half a finger of light mocha colored head forms from an aggressive pour.
Smell - Lots of prunes, some figs, dark malts, alcohol, very roasty.
Taste - Lots of the same in the smell; prunes, roasty dark malts, less of a sting from the alcohol in the taste as apposed to the smell. A littly nutty in the finish.
Mouthfeel - Coats the mouth quite well, very awesome. Nice and smooth from the damn near perfect amount of carbonation.
Drinkability - Strong flavor hurts the drinkability a little. The flavor just punches you in the face on most sips. A very well crafted beer and definitely going to be a staple in my cellar. kazooka (39), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA May 3, 2009 12 oz into a snifter. Pours like oil with minimal tan head. Chocolate, coffee, toffee, burnt marshmallow, very light hops, and malt aromas. Lightly sweet rolling down the tongue to heavy but not overwhelming bitterness. Dried fruit proceeding into a boozy-mocha explosion; full bodied, oil-slick feel, extremely slight carbonation, and extra-long, bitter, roasty, finish. TampaBrew (746), Tampa, Florida, USA May 3, 2009 Pours thick black with thin brown head. Heavy roast, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, fig and alcohol sweetness. Flavor is slight booze, and all the flavors of the nose. Rich an oily, thick chewy mouthfeel. Amazing beer. Scoobs (5), oak creek, Wisconsin, USA does not count Apr 28, 2009 2006 bottle. Pours a rich thick black with a rich brown head. Wonderful aroma of chocolate, coffee and vanilla, perhaps a hint of hops; can’t ask for much more. A rich complex flavor of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla as the nose indicates, with roasted malts and a surprising amount of hops...more so than the other imperial stouts I’ve had. Alcohol isn’t present at all; just a smooth, rich, creamy mouth feel that begs to be rolled around for a good long time. Is this the quintessential imperial stout? beernbourbon (236), chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 25, 2009 Updated: Aug 1, 2009Black. Aroma is malty, coffee, and chocolate. Very little hops detectable. Flavor is overwhelmingly coffee, malt and chocolate. Its got a slightly burnt flavor that Im not a huge fan of. It’s more bitter than sweet. Certainly a winter beer, and a good one at that. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 25, 2009 Out of the bottle, pours deep opaque black with creamy tan head. Aroma gives strong chocolate and coffee with a small tinge of hops. Very thick on the palate, tastes of chocolate, coffee, hops, and a smoky flavor. Finishes bad, with a very strong alcohol taste. Overall an excellent stout. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Apr 24, 2009 Bottle. Blackish with brown highlights and a tiny light tan head. Choclate malt aroma with toffee and a bit of hops. Rich malt with roast and coffee and backing hops. More bitterness than I wuld expect. Fuller bodied. Malt lingers and turn to a piney/resiny bitterness. Alcohol noticeable, but compliments. Nice complexity.
