jeff789 (359), Pennsylvania, USA Dec 26, 2008 I had this really long paragraph written about my tasting of this beer, but when i went to submit it apparently i used an apostrophe that wasnt allowed, so take 2... Wonderfully complex, with dark fruits, roasty for days, but not overkill, lingering bourbonlike warming woodiness... Alcohol is present in feel but not in taste... Great tasting, not less filling... there was more, but i forget now... MFootball (11), USA Dec 26, 2008 12 oz. single bottle. Bought in summer, from the 07 batch created from Jan-Mar.
Easily the most complex and strongest tasting beer that Ive ever had. Tastes very roasty... hints of coffee and chocolate. Smells rich and roasted, pours jet black with a brown head. Alcohol content isnt noticeable while drinking, but really creeps up.
Good, but not usually something Id buy. zulbok (1), Woodbury, New Jersey, USA does not count Dec 25, 2008 12 oz Bottle, very complex flavor, strong robust aroma chocolate coffee and bourbon. Let it sit open up and you have one incredibly flavorful beer. Creamy taste decreases bitterness with a chocolate molasses bourbon finish spitfire9703 (6), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA does not count Dec 22, 2008 12 oz Bottle, Very complex roasted flavors, looks like a black hole, Definitely better after some aging. Great beer, and from my hometown. FlssmrBrewAlum (1079), Lisle, Illinois, USA Dec 22, 2008 12 oz. bottle from my first 6 pack of the season.. and definitely several more to come. Yippe! Pours a pitch black motor oil appearance with sizable deep chocolate head. Aromas pack a punch: chocolate and cocoa, roasted malt, and coffee dominate the nose. Initial taste mirros bitter coffee and semi sweet chocolate mixing well with the roasted malt base. Touches of dark and dried fruits, but not as prominent as say Surly Darkness. Thick bodied, but very palatable. Head that retains well and laces throughout. A palate sticker for sure, large ABV tag well hidden in this murky gem. Strikes a near perfect balance, in the realm of slightly burnt malt and the world that lives between coffee and chocolate, with a hint of creaminess to prevent too much bitterness. Very special beer. Look forward to more and a rerate. Most bang for the buck period. plovmand (1590), Helsinge, Denmark Dec 22, 2008 Rating #800. Bottle. Opaque pitch black body with a long lasting creamy brown head. Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and bittering hops in aroma. A tiny bit of alcohol is there as well. It really fills out the nose with complex notes. The body is very creamy and soft. The flavours are lots of coffee, roasted malts, coffee, tobacco and bourbon. Its very complex. It ends up in a very long tasty oak aged like bourbon finish. Brilliant beer. One of my favorites. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Dec 19, 2008 Updated: Feb 2, 2009Had this bottle of oily goodness after Thanksgiving dinner and it was still awesome, although the BudMillerCoors-guzzling family members were not ready for it. I would call it a mix between Stone RIS and Dark Lord. Although it did not quite stand up to Dark Lord, it had the same coffee/chocolate/cherry flavors and very low carbonation, almost to a fault. Never had Bells until then, and let me tell you, that will not be the last time. WinoInTraining (104), Longmont, Colorado, USA Dec 15, 2008 Updated: Apr 22, 2009Awesome! 12 oz blt, 12/06 batch, thanks to Crosling! Pours deep dark with a slight mahogany head. No light transmission. Creamy, deep, presistant head. Nose is unreal. lBlueberry, tootsie rols, chocolate liqueur, vegemite? Palate is rich and smooth, creamy texture, persistant and long. Flavors of toasted marshemllow, hazelnuts, toasted malt, vanilla, bourbon. Only complaint is the alcohol shows a bit much on the finish. Unreal, its got the points and rep for a reason.
