Aroma was strong with coffee and chocolate, with a little bit of hops in there. The taste has a sweet start with a stong cofee-bitter finish. The palate was syrupy and coated the throat on its way down. This is an excellant beer, but not an everyday drink. bretupdegraff (172), Fishers, Indiana, USA

This beer poured very dark with a small head. aroma was very nice - the taste is verycomplex and wonderful to my palette. This is one of my new favorites! WOW - intense and full of flavor.
I rerated this today. I really like this brew. I must try this with the Stone RIS for comparing - but this time of year, this is easier to find. Awesome beer! Ryan82SM (240), Louisville, Kentucky, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 8, 2008 Bought a bottle in August, lucky boy. The aroma was coffee all the way with a hint of hops. The appearance was black as night, even when held to the light. Heavy coffee flavor with light chocolate undertones. The palate was oily, with a revisiting of the hoppy characteristics of the aroma. This beer kicked my ass, but it was a wonderful ass-kicking. Tejas (695), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 8, 2008 Creamy full mouthfeel. Chocolate and a little alcohol flavor/heat to boot. After 2 bottles I’m not sure if this is top 50 worthy. Didn’t blow my mind but was still extremely good though. foundmd (163), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Pours very thick and black with a creamy, dissipating mocha head. Aroma of deep roasted malts and bitter chocolate. Bold dark chocolate flavor with hints of coffee and dark fruit. Huge malt and hop flavors with some alcohol sweetness. Delicious and intense as hell. This is an amazing beer and superior example of the style. barnzy78 (7), Illinois, USA does not count | 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Aug 8, 2008 Pours a thick black with a brown head that slowly settles. Overall rich aromas, smooth mouth-feel. Alcohol stands out, but is well balanced by the bold flavors. My favorite. fidel (915), Livermore, California, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 7, 2008 12oz bottle, very dark and thick pour, head is creamy and brown. Leaves generous lacing on the glass. Aroma is quite rich, earthy, hoppy moss, some dank sweetness like blackstrap molasses, sorghum, tamari, black licorice (panda brand specifically). First sip is thickly tongue coating, massive body, deep rich roast and heavy burnt sugars, nice bitter hop backbone. Overall really nice, leans a little too much towards the burnt flavors for me, this beer is good, but I think a bit overdone in areas. It is just not one that makes me salivate and crave more, overrated IMHO.
