unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Apr 4, 2008 Got this in a tarde with punkrkr27. Excellent. A superior stout. Pours out a DEEP brown with a thin brown head. Chocolate, coffee, sweet malts, light hops, sweet prunes, and alcohol flavors meld together to create a brewing masterpiece. The flavors linger on your palate and remind you of the experience. An excellent effort. I look forward to trying their other beers. My only complaint is that this brew could have been a little bit more complex, but it’s tastyness overwhelms all possible qualms. Bravo!
MatSciGuy (629), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Apr 2, 2008 Updated: Dec 7, 2008[Bottle] One of my favorite beers. Pours used motor oil black with a finger of tan head. Thick, coating mouthfeel with flavors of molasses, roasted barley, baker’s chocolate, caramel, and a surprising amount of citric and noble hops. Semi-sweet finish to round out the moderate bitterness. Awesome brew. markas101 (541), Fargo, North Dakota, USA Mar 31, 2008 33 cl bottle, Fargo. Ink-black colour, dark tan head. Earthy malt aroma with subdued hops in the background. Tastes....thick. Smooth going down, roasted malt and finishes with a sharp hop bite. Aftertaste lingers and some alcohol burn at the end. Still quite nice, if it indeed mellows with age this could be a great beer. fattibobatti (246), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Mar 24, 2008 poured pitch black with a large creamy tan head. great lacing. aroma is chocolate, roast, pine hops that linger. powerful. flavor is full and complex. start was creamy rich dark chocolate fades to a mellow roast and finishes with powerful hops. the hops would be much tamer if aged a little. oily and thick body. alcohol is well hidden among the flavor. great beer. jsh12bama (335), Alabama, USA Mar 23, 2008 Pours black with thick brown head. Great looking beer in the glass. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. Nice thick, creamy mouthfeel. Taste of chocolate, smoke, molasses, and coffee. Alcohol is evident with nice burn in the finish. biznizness (930), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA Mar 22, 2008 Thick and goey, super super heavy roasted flavor. Hard to drink the whole thing, it took me a long time to get it down. Bold and delicious, I’m not sure it was quite possible for it to live up to my expectations. desurfer (1067), Pinellas Park, Florida, USA Mar 22, 2008 Bottle at Oldsmar Tap House. Finally, the chance to drink this legend of a beer. It pours an oily, opaque black with a rich mocha head. Pouring the yeast in the glass makes no differnece in appearance. The aroma is heavy on roasted malts and alcohol. The flavor is intense! This is a huge beer, maybe the most assertive I’ve ever had. Rich bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee and molasses repeatedly slap my palate around with every sip. Carbonation is strong, and the alcohol is very evident. It forces you to drink slow and take small sips. It’s rounded out with a good dose of hoppiness, but the malt complexity is the real showstopper. Absolutely fantastic. Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 22, 2008 Updated: Jun 15, 2008Syrupy pour, black as night with thin brownish head. thin spotty lacing. Aroma is chocolatey syrup, earthy piny hops and notes of licorice. Sweet and spicy flavor that blends well with a chocolatey syrup flavor. A little swirl of the glass brings the head to life accentuating the spicy hops and creamy mouthfeel. Very oily and piney flavors begin to push the chocolate notes back. Alcohol aromas awaken as it warms, though it just adds another level of character to this drinkable beauty. I could use a bit more chocolate sweetness for balance, though it doesnt need it really. Residual bitterness leaves a pleasant taste on the tongue, but seems just a tad off to me. dont get me wrong, this beer is top notch just the way it is.
