ksurkin (355), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Feb 28, 2008 Updated: Jan 16, 2009this beer has truly made a hop-head a stout guy. pours jet black with a soft dark brown head, and great lacing. aroma was of roast coffee, cocoa powder, and a great hoppy presence with a touch of alcohol. flavor was just superb. intense coffee, fresh expresso, dark malts, dark chocolate, and a lovely hop bitterness. after the swallow a long lasting bittersweetness lingers on the toungue. 10.5%abv adds a touch of warmth adding balance to the beer. simply another great offering from bells and definitely the best stout i’ve tasted. debianlinux (10), North Carolina, USA Feb 28, 2008 Only had this one on tap a few times. Pitch black in the glass with a cocoa froth. Pungent smell of cocoa-coffee-hops. It’s a full tilt stout that makes a mouthful out of a swig. By the time you find the bottom of the pint you’ll be appreciating the high ABV and the morphic character of the taste. grandet (477), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 28, 2008 Bottle. Nice black pour with a pretty big head. Coffee and chocolate aroma. Very smooth and blaanced taste, covers the alcohol well. Very warming and good afireinside96 (817), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 27, 2008 bottle. pours a midnight black with a large silky chocolate-cherry head. the smells that emanate from the glass resemble the bastard love child of a chocolate-espresso-cordial cherry menage a trois. has a deep rich roasted bitterness that carries into the finish. alcohol makes its presence know around mid-glass, blending seamlessly into the bitter finish. warmth creeps down your throat and fills your core with happiness. leaves a lovely delicate sheet of lace all the way down to the bottom of the glass. this is one for any stout lover to try. inkubus27 (237), Highland, Indiana, USA Feb 27, 2008 Updated: Apr 5, 2008Imagine pulling the plug from the oil pan of your car, that’s how this stuff pours. It’s opaque as could be and built an unexpected deep brown head. Tastes like espresso, maybe has some slight hints of cherries?? Aftertaste is wonderful and almost non-existent. I’m not a big fan of stouts but this one surprised me and had me coming back for more. beerbill (1919), Laurel, New York, USA Feb 24, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with Photekut. Pours black with a luscious, moderate-large brown head that lasted until mid-glass and left lots of lacing. Very strong aroma of chocolate liquer, roasted malt and to a lesser extent, coffee. The flavor is more dominated by the roasted malt than the aroma, with lots of chocolate and again some light coffee. Initially, there is also a strong tobacco flavor that emerges near the finish which I did not care for all that much. As the beer warmed a bit and breathed, that aspect thankfully disappeared. Some bitterness at the finish, but not overdone. A great beer for a snowy and cold winter’s night to enjoy by the fire, which I did. lmoss (3), USA does not count Feb 22, 2008 Pours dark, syrupy, motor oil. Half inch dark brown head with an aggressive pour. Full glass lacing.
Initial smell of sweet, chocolate followed by roasted coffee.
Sweet, syrupy, malty, very hot.. I can taste the alcohol here. As it warms, alcohol starts to disappear.. burnt coffee, chocolate, hop bite on the back end.
BabyJoe692 (109), Pickerington, Ohio, USA Feb 22, 2008 Bottle. Nice roasty aroma. Pours dark black with a dark brown almost black thin head that disappears quickly. Tastes of coffee and dark chocolate, some sweetness but well balanced.
