COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

Wow... Wow... Killer snifter pour of motor oil with full dark creamy head. Nose is super rich, full of dark coffee and heavy chocolate... You can smell the weight. Caramel, smooth caramel. Flavor is heavy rich... Tastes like everything I want in motor oil. Dark chocolate and creamed coffee. Not very bitter. Sweet caramel and milk chocolate finish. Intense all over...

Bottle pour into snifter. The bottle is from September 2013 - so just over a year on it. This is a ’wow’ beer. Kicks up an excellent inch high brown tan head. The deep dark color here and appearance is outstanding. No major nose until this warms - at which point woody and tobacco notes come out. Mouthfeel here is creamy and full without any stickiness. Dried fruit - raisin and fig come in on the palate. Roasted and dark chocolate notes provide a grounding without overwhelming the balance here. Walnut and tobacco on the back end. A real treat.

Poured from a 12oz longneck bottle into a nonic glass. Opaque black colour, brown foam, lasting with lace. Malty, bready, toasty, caramel, toffee, kacao nibs, extremely roasty, lots of burnt grain bitterness to blend with the hoppy bitterness. English-style hop flavours: earthy, flowery, woodsy. Tannic, tart, reminiscent of cherry pie, plum wine, smooth alcoholic warmth. Medium-heavy body, well-rounded mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, complex long-lasting aftertaste. Here is a perfect example of how good Russian Imperial Stout can be WITHOUT any bourbon barrel aging or any kind of trendy flavour additives. This beer is as delicious as everyone says. Highly recommended.

Bottle on 12/21/14. Pours jet black with a thin tan head. Nose is dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, soy sauce or beef. Taste is sweet chocolate, dark fruit, some coffee, brown sugar, so good. Mouthfeel is thick and gooey. Amazing.

Aroma is very coffee and chocolate with hints of vanilla. Appears coffee bean brown, thin ring of foam, minimal lace. Tastes of sweet milk chocolate, then some coffee, then fades into bitter dark chocolate, the ending is like dark chocolate melting in your mouth. Overall, beautiful.

Tap. Pitch black. Some minimal head/lacing. Nose of pure roasted malt. Full, rich body. Tastes of sweet chocolate, roasted coffee, mild raisin. Very rich and roasty. Tastes strong without being too boozey.

2014 bottling, via Justin D. Pours a dark opaque brown/black, decent amount of creamy looking tan head. Aroma dry and earthy, baking chocolate, cocoa. Body full and roasty, with a surprisingly sweet finish, caramel, figs, dates. Not my all-time favorite, but understanding of the ratings.

Picked up a single bottle at Vintage Estates in Boardman, OH. Poured straight down the middle of a snifter, very thin light brown head that dissipated quickly. Pours like old motor oil, and I mean that in the best way possible. I appreciate the wide range of aromas that people detect in this, but all I smelled was dark chocolate. The whole beer smells like a 70% cocoa chocolate. Surprising amount of carbonation up front, taste is very bitter. Obviously very roasty and malty, but there’s some pininess about it for sure. On the back end all that classic Russian imperial stout stuff shines through: coffee, chocolate, date, plum. Really heavy mouthfeel, to be expected from a beer that is nothing to trifle with. Gets much better as it warms. Overall, a bold take on the style that doesn’t make me feel like I’m drinking alcoholic hot chocolate.
