One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

Like a friend you’ve known for years but haven’t seen in a while, the Expedition stout has a surprising first impression but then a familiar second one. The aroma is dry and roasted like strong coffee but the taste is thick, viscous, and sweet. There’s my old friend.

Mooie zwarte kleur met een goede goudbruine kraag. Ruikt vol, vanille, crème, bitterzoet. Beetje alcohol, chocolade. Smaakt vol, bitterzoet, koffie, vanille, crème. Beetje drop-achtig. Mooie volle bitterzoete nasmaak. Dikke structuur. Fantastisch!

Originally reviewed 3/15/2013. 12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Batch 10068, 12/17/2010. Inky viscous black that yields only the slightest tinge of brown at the edges. Not much of a head. Thin khaki collar around the edge with just a lonely dime-sized island of foam roaming the surface. I can smell the molasses from the open bottle. Tons of molasses. A stronger sniff unveils booze, licorice, and ashy burnt malt. Taste is molasses again. Really creamy in the middle with just a little bit of sweetness and then the onslaught begins. Licorice, dark fruits, the darkest chocolate. Burnt pieces of chocolate, really. Ashy and extremely bitter. Booze comes back at the last gasp and bites the throat. Low carbonation, boozy, nearly acrid in its ashy bitterness. And yet it manages to be creamy and delicious. Every complaint I have ever had about fresh Expedition Stout has turned into an attribute in this bottle. Two years has done this very well.

It pours black with a dark brown head. It has aromas of chocolate, coffee, and cocoa. It has a rich, creamy texture with flavors of sweet chocolate, black coffee, and cocoa. It packs a bitter sweet punch on the palate.

Probably the darkest, thickest, maltiest stout I've ever had. Really hoppy with a great aftertaste. Really heavy but really tasty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Thick and inky with large foamy tan head. Chocolate and a light wisp of alcohol on the nose. Taste- wow, incredibly rich and chewy. Roasted chocolate malts slam your taste buds. Less dominant flavors include honey, coffee, raisin, tobacco and alcohol. Giant Stout. It's easy to see why stout lovers love this ale so much. It's really good but just not my style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours thick and rich, with aromas of dark chocolate and roasted malts. Little to no head retention. Very warming and decadent. Drinking this in July, not usually the style I go for, but I didn’t have the will power to wait for cooler weather.

Smells of alcohol and faint hints of chocolate and coffee. Low carbonation with a sticky syrupy mouthfeel. Lightly foamy. Taste is dominated by the alcohol, but of course also has the typical stout tastes present as well such as raisins, dark chocolate, and roasted malts. Aftertaste is long length and the same. You get immediate warmth from the alcohol and taste of alcohol that subsides over the course of about 20 seconds. Too boozy for me. Gets significantly better with age though.

bottle to pint glass from....poured jet black with a effervescent brown head, complex flavors of caramel, chocolate and raisin, with a thick creamy with of a slight burn of alcohol to finish the sip. I would like to lay a few of these down, and update the review.

12oz bottle pours a thick dark color with a bit of brown head. Silky smooth and lots of sweetness. Loads of flavor. Chocolate and berries and plums. Medium hop bitterness at the end.
