3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
NOTE - DRANK FRESH (same year as bottled). Bottled 1/2012; drank 12/2012
Pours like night, great rich head, mild sickly sweet aroma. Good balance of malt throughout, mild acidic front end and lingering alcohol flavor on back end. Lacking of hops (bouquet more than flavor) or a milky richness for my tastes - I believe there should be one or the other at least in a stout.
Again - drank fresh. If left to age for 12 to 36 months longer, likely would be a much better brew.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle. Bottled 7/26/13. Pours a medium, well retained, dark beige head, with some lacing over a black brown (SRM 40) body.....nose is chocolate, coffee, dried fruits, hints of umami, ethanol.....taste is lightly sweet, with coffee, chocolate, dried fruits including plum, fig, hints of brown sugar, light beef tones, finishing with a soft bitterness.....mouth feel on the heavy side of medium, sticky, alcohol warmth present but subdued, carbonation low with a soft finish. This is a lovely complex confection. The bitterness is subdued, but the balance is superb. BJCP 9/3/17/5/8

Fantastic stout. Beautiful aroma that seems a bit hoppy. Black in appearance. Lightly sweet and moderately bitter in taste. A full bodied, thick beer. Perfect for winter.

Absolutely amazing Impy Stout. I just tried this for the first time tonight and it was a 2012. Wow super complex, picking up dark fruits, cherries, plum and raisin notes as well as chocolate, toffee, butterscotch as well. A year has done wonders on this beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at World of Beer, Ann Arbor poured into snifter. Midnight black with tall chocolate milk-colored head that leaves rings of lacing on the drink down. Aroma is chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malt, and alcohol. Taste is similar - malty with chocolate, coffee, and roasted flavors. Modest bitterness from hop and espresso supply balance. Full bodied, creamy, chewy, and thick texture, low carbonation, and a bit of burn on the finish.

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
3 mos old. Black with edges of ruby red. Nice chocolatey head. Complex nose is an understatement. A carousel of malt, dark fruit (cherry raisin), roasted chocolate, a little booze. Taste is short fruity which quickly turns into roasted coffee and chocolate. Bitterness slowly grows and then slowly goes away. Light burn in the esophagus from the booze. A year or so of aging would do this beer well, I could see the bitter notes dropping out and more prominent fruit notes. Pair with chocolate or steak.
