One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

NOTE - DRANK FRESH (same year as bottled). Bottled 1/2012; drank 12/2012 Pours like night, great rich head, mild sickly sweet aroma. Good balance of malt throughout, mild acidic front end and lingering alcohol flavor on back end. Lacking of hops (bouquet more than flavor) or a milky richness for my tastes - I believe there should be one or the other at least in a stout. Again - drank fresh. If left to age for 12 to 36 months longer, likely would be a much better brew.

Aroma is very coffee and chocolate with hints of vanilla. Appears coffee bean brown, thin ring of foam, minimal lace. Tastes of sweet milk chocolate, then some coffee, then fades into bitter dark chocolate, the ending is like dark chocolate melting in your mouth. Overall, beautiful.

Tap. Pitch black. Some minimal head/lacing. Nose of pure roasted malt. Full, rich body. Tastes of sweet chocolate, roasted coffee, mild raisin. Very rich and roasty. Tastes strong without being too boozey.

2014 bottling, via Justin D. Pours a dark opaque brown/black, decent amount of creamy looking tan head. Aroma dry and earthy, baking chocolate, cocoa. Body full and roasty, with a surprisingly sweet finish, caramel, figs, dates. Not my all-time favorite, but understanding of the ratings.

Picked up a single bottle at Vintage Estates in Boardman, OH. Poured straight down the middle of a snifter, very thin light brown head that dissipated quickly. Pours like old motor oil, and I mean that in the best way possible. I appreciate the wide range of aromas that people detect in this, but all I smelled was dark chocolate. The whole beer smells like a 70% cocoa chocolate. Surprising amount of carbonation up front, taste is very bitter. Obviously very roasty and malty, but there’s some pininess about it for sure. On the back end all that classic Russian imperial stout stuff shines through: coffee, chocolate, date, plum. Really heavy mouthfeel, to be expected from a beer that is nothing to trifle with. Gets much better as it warms. Overall, a bold take on the style that doesn’t make me feel like I’m drinking alcoholic hot chocolate.

12 oz bottle. Tasted on 12/11/14. Bottle from Lukas Liquor Kansas City. Pours to a jet black color with a small dark tan head. Aroma had light chocolate with coco & dark fruit. The taste was smooth with a mild bittersweet flavor of chocolate raisins, dark fruit & a slight boozy finish. Overall one of the best stouts I've had the pleasure of trying. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I am cellaring a bunch of these so bear with me on this. I have had both a fresh and one year old side by side last evening. Both poured into their own snifters, respectively. Beautiful black base with uniform dark khaki heads on each. Aromas of roasted coffee, cocoa, dark bittersweet chocolate, figs, licorice and brown sugar. The fresh snifter was definitely a touch more bitter, the year old had the "edge" taken off a bit. I would also say the year old was just slightly more sticky in mouth-feel maybe a little sweeter as well. Towards the end I blended the two together and finished up. Surprisingly not as bitter in the blend as well so that was nice to see. You need to get some of this Imperial stout if you’re able... the quality is with the best of them and for the price per six pack you really can’t go wrong. Put some aside and enjoy the Expedition!

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a small mocca brown head. Aromas of dark sweet fruits, pretty big malty notes coming up, fruity coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, light salty licorice. Taste is more malty up front, salty licorice, dark fruits, raisins fruity coffee, very dark bitter chocolate, heavy roast.

Pours jet black, almost oily, with thick, red tinged, dark brown head. Aroma is semisweet chocolate, cocoa nibs, wet grain, almost coffee. Taste is boozy, hot alcohol but also bitter chocolate, burnt toast, sorta sweet at the end. Very nice mouthfeel, thick, chewy. Overall great stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
