COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

Maybe the best looking pour on an imperial stout I’ve ever seen. Opaque pitch black with a large fluffy brown head that doesn’t die down. Huge toasted malt nose, lots of dark earthy chocolate notes, subtle coffee, caramel, a bit of raisins and a little boozy. Taste is massive bitter chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, dark coffee and a hint of alcohol. Full bodied, supberb balance, absolutely delicious.

Fair sized sampel from 355 ml. bottle at Gollem. Bottle says 11/06/2015 meaning bottled 6th of November 2015 I assume? Black, solid mocha. Nose is mellow umami, herbal with roast, soy sauce,… taste is mellow herbal umami, some soy sauce, low molasses, roast, touch of blueberry, very long aftertaste which is nice but finish is largely thinner umami, herbal, roast, almost vegetable, some earth in the finish. Thinner than expected syrup & molasses body. Kind of expected a bit more from a beer this big in production & massive in appreciation. Price & distribution probably play a bit roast but this huge umami, burned mushroom & vegetable profile didn’t do it for me. I prefer my RIS with more desert-like coffee & chocolate sweetness. This one was a bit lost on me, I actually started liking it less as it warmed up. I heard that this beer needs a lot of time but I just don’t see this flavours evolving closer to what I like.

Almost blackish beer with beige head on top. Aroma has slight liquor, some berries, roasted malts, espresso coffee, some berry note and liquor-like ending, a bit boozy after warming up. Full body and lowish carbonation. A slight disappointment, maybe the voyage from USA to Finland has taken its toll.

Pitch black oil thick viscosity color with a very thin beige foam ring. The nose has sweet chocolate and some decent berry touch and some hints of alcohol. The taste is extremely thick, smooth and full. The taste has an intense detonation of chocolate, vanilla, berries and a slight spicy alcoholic finish. Dry chocolate light alcoholic smooth milky aftertaste.
