Last beer of the night for me. 2002 vintage. Dark black pour with almost no head. Could have oxidized and flattened out a bit. I’ve had new vintages of Expedition, but this one was different. There was a soy sauce/teriyaki thing going on, along with tons of chocolate, booze, coffee and dark fruits. Also get some nutty sweetness on the very back end of the aroma and into the flavor. Flavor is delicious, chocolate, coffee beans, soy, and dark roasted malts. Full bodied, low carbonation,, very substantial and filling. Super long finish, chocolate and coffee the stars. I don’t know, if you would have told me before hand what this would taste and smell like, I probably would have been put off by it, but this is the best of the very few Expeditions I have had. The best Bells beer I have had yet, and that’s saying something from possibly my favorite brewery.
sleepylopes (231), New York, USA Jul 4, 2008 All time fave, this one via trade as I am in ny. Big and creamy the pour almost puts the gravity bar to shame. Melo sweet aroma dark malt and fair Choco hops. Smooth and ballance with just a bit of booz. Great long finish amc3000 (29), houston, Texas, USA Jul 4, 2008 12oz. bottle. thanks to maltomeal.
nice dark syrupy pour. little to no head.aroma is strong malt with smokiness hidden away and slight chocolate oak tones. taste is huge with alcohol and malty thickness. coats your tongue with goodness. lasting aftertaste. cblado (66), Wisconsin, USA Jun 30, 2008 12 oz bottle. Poured a thick, dark tar color, nearly opaque. Significant tan head to it. Aroma was a chocolatey malt, some bitter coffee notes. Flavor was very complex. Lots of roasty, mocha notes, carried on a strong bitter molasses taste. Wow. There is some alcohol aftertaste as well, not unpleasant in the least. Overall a great imperial stout, something I’ll be coming back to for sure. wcampbell (365), Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 29, 2008 Awesome. Extremely heavy and full bodied. Thick chocolate and roasted malt taste, some vanilla as well. Very complex. No trace of alcohol, covered up by all of the other flavors. Lightly carbonated. Lightly bitter, roasty finish that lingers. I think this would make a really tasty beer float. phishpond417 (1110), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jun 29, 2008 WOw! An amazing day filled with amazing beers, I saved this one for last and good thing I did. Pours a deep, dark opaque black colour, with little to no head. Taste is incredibly creamy, rich with heavily roasted malts. Dark chocolate throughout. Aromas of coffee, chocolate and burnt toast. Little bit of black cherry, licorice, oak, coffee grounds and smoke. Excellent beer to say the least.
