fredandboboflo (306), East Setauket, New York, USA May 12, 2008 Updated: May 24, 2008 Bottle. Gorgeous, perfect tight-bubbled head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate; rich roasted malt and its counterparts. A touch light for the flavor to come, but I’m not going to complain it under a 9. Flavor has little bits of everything, in addition to the notes in the aroma (which become stronger in the mouth), plums, raisins, prunes (none too harsh or prevalent), bitter hops (also never override the sweet richness). Palate is on the sweet side, but for me the hops dried it out perfectly for an imperial stout, that is enough to keep it from syrupiness without the hops taking over the flavor profile and not even touching all that richness in the aroma. Absolutely awesome.
MrChopin (118), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 25, 2008 Black with small beige head. Nose has coffee, vanilla, and a significant alcohol. The roast comes through huge in the flavor, with more coffee, slight chocolate, and alcohol. Salty and oppressive. While it’s really good, there’s nothing that sets this one apart for me. bigtaster (98), Grand Rapids, USA Jul 22, 2008 12oz bottle in snifter. Most viscosity of any beer I’ve experienced, tar colored with slight formation of head dissipating in moments. Aroma of some old bananas, some smoky woody hints. Immediate hit of robustness enveloping entire palate, some dark chocolate, woody pine flavors. The flavor fads into a strong tar taste, charcoal, deep bruising bitterness. The attack on the palate prevents further complexity to surface. Aging this may render something more beautiful. scotch4281 (11), Hollywood, Florida, USA Jul 22, 2008 Phenomenal beer! It had a thick texture, with almost a semi-sweet chocolate taste, and slightly burnt. I really loved it. MtStateBeer (43), Hurricane, West Virginia, USA Jul 21, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a nice black color with a creamy brown head. Aroma is mainly chocolate, a little coffee, and some spicy hop notes. Flavor is chocolate and ends somewhat bitter. Hides the alcohol and warms very, very well. Great beer! markwise (205), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 20, 2008 This is a very good stout! It pours a dark black with a creamy brownish tan head that is almost nonexistent. The aroma smells of dark chocolate with notes of chicory and the chocolate malty sweetness. The flavor is the same chocolate, malt, some slight alcoholic sweet notes and a slightly dry finish. For the price it is on par with World Wide Stout, but WW has a smoother finish. Great example of the style, and a solid beer. Great beer for #200.
