COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

Perfect appearance: pitch black with a thick, creamy tan head. Warming aroma. Surprisingly smooth for the ABV; boozy but not harsh at all. The malts have a complex mix of chocolate, toffee, dark fruit, and burnt toast. Sharp, resiny hops with some spruce notes. Very unique and complex flavor. Highly bitter. Can’t wait to have this again after aging it for a couple years.

Bottle. Rich roasted malt aroma with notes of chocolate, dark fruit and a bit of coffee. Pours black with a thin light brown head with good retention and excellent lacing. Starts with rich roasted malt flavors as well as sweet dark fruit notes to go with a rich full body and mouthfeel. Finishes incredibly smooth with chocolate and just a hint of coffee. Top notch and an excellent stout.

Bottle from beer gonzo. Hard to come by this beer in the UK. Just a casual top 50 beer of a Tuesday evening. A creamy viscous opaque black coloured pour with a lasting dark tan head. Aroma is nicely layered earthy roasted malts, Hickory smoked wood, toasted coconut shaving, treacle and some tangy berry fruits in there as well. Palate is full bodied and creamy, velvety smooth, maybe a little on the sweet side. Moderate carbonation stops it from being overtly cloying. Flavour is composed rich dark chocolate, roasted grains, treacle and bitter liquorice. Rounded sweet finish with some acrid roasted notes. Very enjoyable.

Bottle from Uba ja Humal. Bottled 06.11.2015 (i.e 8 months ago). Pours near black with a tan head that ain’t big but retains around the edge. Aroma of chocolate fudge cake with rum, vanilla and figs, raisins... Thick... Tastes oh so sweet, liquid chocolate fudge cake, hint of tobacco. Heavy on the tongue, very fine but somewhat active carbonation, considerable tobacco / black tea bitterish finish. Even slightly burning hoppiness. Oh man. I wonder what it’s like after aging... Would love to know... Lovely stuff, pretty much exactly the way I like my Impies.

Bottle in wine glass. I wasn’t expecting this beer to be so good. Pours beautifully in black leaving a perfect brownish 2 mm head. Aroma is full of coffee and roasted caramel that both comes forth in great complexity on the palate. Long evolving finish that is really world class. Glad to see it has the proper score here on RB.

The aroma is nice and toasty but I definitely get a bit of cardboard in there too. When it comes to flavor though, this is bomb. Deep molasses, coffee and chocolate, a light smoky roast. Wonderful finish on it. Long and robust.

0,355l bottle at home. PKGD (packaged?) 11/06/2015. almost black color, small dark coffee-colored head. smells roasty, light alcohol, coffee, light wood, lightly glueish, some sherry, earthy, also coffee, hints of dried fruits. nice smell. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes roasty, light licorice, light alcohol, a bit glueish, some dried fruits, raisins. finishes light roasty with notes of raisins and some alcohol. not bad but also not that spectacular. had this at the same time with dark horse plead the 5th, and that one wins by a margin.. overall still very nice beer though.
