COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

Poured velvety black with a thick snowy chocolate head with sensuous lacing. Aroma is nutty, caramel, chocolate, maple, vanilla, brown sugar, port. Flavor is ridiculously chocolate malty, some roasted barley, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and coffee. The carbonation is slightl but does accentuate the oak finish. Otherwise the palate is velvet but not thick. One of my all time favorites!

Bottled 10/23/14. Pours absolutely pitch black. One of the darkest beers Iíve ever seen. Tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, lots of chocolate, some coffee and some licorice maybe? Cherry? Little bit of booze comes through. Amazing Aroma. Flavor is deliciously dark roasted malts and chocolate. Little bit of licorice. The mouthfeel is so incredible. It just fills up your mouth. So full bodied. Bitter coffee finish. Top notch imperial stout.

Bottled in Sept. 2014. Tasted on 1/16/15. Color is pitch-black. Deep tan head, 1/2 finger. Smell is soy sauce, deep wood and chocolate notes, molasses, licorice. Taste is bittersweet, creamy, French roast coffee, charred wood, cocoa nibs. Long drying finish. Only the barest hint of dark fruit flavors/aroma. Not bad, but Iím more interested in how this tastes with a year or two on it.

Thanks to tderoeck for the bottle! Poured into a teku glass, showing pitch ink black and very little if any latte foam that fades into swirls in the glass. The nose is complex - a lot of bourbon and charred wood. Generous notes of dark chocolate and coffee beans. Also lighter hints of vanilla. The palate shows an oily, slick, impossibly smooth, and light body. The first impression shows a lot of the bourbon, and smoked wood with light hints of the dark chocolate. The mid palate matures into more of the bourbon and smokiness. The finish shows a noticeable but short sweetness akin to vanilla or a milk stout and a strong but not overwhelming espresso bitterness. This is a really tasty sipper. Very curious to see how this ages.

12oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Bottle packages on 8/22/14. Pours dark black, completely opaque. Small layer of mocha head on top. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, plum, roasty, subtle alcohol complex. Taste is chocolatey bitter upfront, but not over powering. Very subtly sweet undertone. Mouthfeel is rich and full. Smooth texture. Long silky finish. Theyíve obviously got this beer dialed in after many years of producing it. This beer only improves with time.

Pours deep black with a thick foamy dark brown head, and a thinner light brown foam on top of that. Aroma and flavor are chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt in a perfect balance with neither dominating. Exceptional stout, indeed.

BIG! Hard to believe itís a six pack imperial stout. ROUGH! Alcohol in the nose and finish. Iím putting the other five in the cellar, should be FANTASTIC in a couple years!

12oz bottle from October 2014 poured into a snifter. Pours an inky black with the look and consistency of used motor oil. Leaves a quick glimpse of a tan head that quickly fades away. Some nice splotches on the sides of the glass. Aroma really jumps with coffee, dark chocolate, and prunes. A bit of a charred character hinting at the roastyness. The flavor when cold is really bitter with a tartness that surprised me. As the beer warmed, however, this smoothed out considerably and everything just seemed to meld. Coffee, char, and dark fruit just seem to be married perfectly with just enough bitterness to keep the sweetness in check. Incredible mouthfeel that is silky smooth and the alcohol is barely noticeable. Overall, an incredible RIS and very drinkable. Really hits all the high points of the style and is quite delicious.

This is really freaking good. Probably my favorite of the midwestern heavy weight stouts like Darklord and Bourbon County.

Bottle by Cuso, thanks! Aroma rich malty, coffee, sherry-like, raisins. Pitch colour. Taste is once again rich dark malty, chocolate, roasted, toffee, raisins, very nicely balanced. Also quite easily drinkable considering the ABV. Alcohol hidden well. Excellent.

Bottle by Cuso, many, many thanks for this one. Pours dark brown color, small beige head. Aroma of vanilla, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, roasted malt. Taste is sweet, medium bitter, vanilla, coffee, plums, dark chocolate, cherries, lot of dark fruits. Very nice sweet cherries in the end with warming alcohol. Great beer, great one...
