Aroma has hints of fruits, malts and yeasts. Flavor is sweet and malty with hints of fruits and spices. Mouthfeel is thin but warming. Overall, very good representation of a Belgium style. noahb (6), USA does not count | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 30, 2007 This is a hybrid rating. I had both on tap and in bottle and I can say that tap was superior. Overall the density of the beer is incredible, something to behold. I found the richness to be great, though savored. Roasty, malty, and slightly fruity like figs or dates. Very complex beer, well worth trying. mjg74 (2001), La Mesa, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 29, 2007 Bottle from Sprinkle. Pours a deep black color. Darkest dubbel I’ve seen. Dark roasted malty aroma, along with a hint of yeastiness and dark fruit. Flavor up front is somewhat smoke, with roasted maltiness. Alot like a stout with some yeast and spiciness. Ineresting and enjoyable. Well hidden alcohol. JCB (1799), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Well, this is interesting! 12oz from a trade with drewbeerme - thanks! Having some of the "it’s a stout masquerading as a dubbel" reviews I have to say I’m a bit persuaded. As I opened this and poured it into a snifter, I got a strong aroma of clove and vanilla. As it warmed a bit there was a definite anise presence, with a bit of roastiness to boot. Lovely oily brown body, with a slightly too-thin mouthfeel (barely any lacing). But as you get deeper into this beer it’s dubbel through and through. Really quirky and something I’d love to try again. Optigon (562), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Pours dark with little head. Dark malty, alcoholic, coffee aroma. Malty flavor of chocolate, tobacco, and wood. Strong warm alcoholic quality, very appropriate title. oh6gdx (9162), Vasa, Finland

Aroma is tar, alcohol, roasted malts and coffee and slight leatheryness. Flavour is leather, roasted malts, licorace, smoked wet wood. Quite lots of anything in it. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 21, 2007 Updated: Jan 22, 200712oz. bottle - pours pretty much black, with a decent tan head that dissipated quickly. This looks like a porter or a stout...not really like a dubbel. Aroma is...uh...also like a porter or stout. At least much more than it reminds me of an abbey ale. But it’s good. Roasted malt and woody smoke in the aroma, along with some traces of dark fruit. Ah hah - flavour amplifies these same qualities, but the fruity character comes through much more at the back and in the finish. In the foreground is that same woody smoke, but also intensified. Sweet and malty throughout. Some nice bitterness in the finish as well, with a good lingering aftertaste. Really unique brew, and very drinkable. A strange marriage of styles, but it works. Certainly unlike anything I’ve had before. BennyTicklez (621), USA
