hellomynameis (743), Mayer, Minnesota, USA Nov 4, 2006 Mmmmm, yummy! This was very dark, kind of surprised me for some reason. The colour was mostly brown, and you couldn’t see through it even when up to a light source. The head was pretty large even after a controlled pour and had a nice off white head. the aroma contained spices of clove and others of unknown name. This was light but creamy feeling, filled more with flavour than body, but could never be considered thin or watery. the flavour was predominatly tasty up front malts with some spice lending a nice flavour balanced outg by a bit of a hop note, but that seems to merely balance this beer rather than add it’s own flavour profile. there was a bit of a lingering feeling that made me feel more like I should drink more, opposed to making me feel like I can nurse it. I’m glad I got to try this finally, and it only increases my respect for Larry Bell.
Snojerk321 (1153), San Diego, California, USA Jan 7, 2009 Poured a dark reddish orange color with a tan head. Aroma of malt and a little of smoke. Taste is malty with a hop kinda finish and a touch of smoke. chronictonic (368), Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 3, 2009 bottle - pours dark brown with a tan head. mild aroma - some roasted black or chocolate malt aroma (kind of out of place in an abbey dubbel). Flavor is overwhelmingly roasted chocolate with some notes of belgian sugars and esthers. This is more like a medium stout with some belgian stylings. Did not finish. jmm635 (124), Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 1, 2009 Nothing really special about this beer for me. Poured a real dark brown with a light tan head. Nice appearance, but a letdown after that. Aroma and flavor were both pretty light, made up mostly of roasted malts, caramel, and toffee. Bells has some great stuff, but this isn’t one of the best. coyotehunter (99), , Michigan, USA Dec 31, 2008 This beer does me so much good. Dark brown almost black pour with a wonderrful roasted malt and hoppy aroma.Notes of caramel toffee, dark fruit and hops. Good sryupy flavor of brown sugar, caramel, prunes, and a bit of oak. As it warms the flavor seems to get richer. Fantasticness. BeerGestapo (422), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 28, 2008 Brewed in the USA........ Pours a deep brown / almost black color with thin tan head. Aroma of lite chocolate, malts, and a hint of coffee. Taste is of chocolate, wood, coffee, and some dark fruit. The mouthfeel is creamy, well balanced and finishes with a sticky dryness. Bells has some unique brews and is well worth seeking out.
